Default cx died today.. starter problem?

earlier today i tried to start my car and it didnt start but it started making sounds like it was trying to start. i took out my key and it still made that sound... so i went to open the hood and smoke was coming out of the starter. it didnt stop tryin to start so i took out the negative and positive connections to the battery. when i took it out thats when it stopped. has this ever happened to anyone? is it possible that wires could have been fried? do i just replace the starter to fix the problem or is my whole engine messed up?

I would look at the wiring and see if it is not fried or messed up. I would take the starter and have it test to see if it is not messed inside. (take it to a auto parts store, they will test it for you). Just see if any thing is out of place or burned.

I have a starter laying around I'll let go resonably if you need it.
Good Luck
