Default quick tranny question for all you tranny people!!

I just installed my b18 w/ a b16 trans. When we rolled the car out of the garage last night, the tranny was making this clicking sound, kind of like when you stick a baseballcard in the spokes of a bike cept more metallic sounding. The tranny has no fluid in it which is y we rolled it out and i do not have the bushing that holds the shift rod to the trans so the gears were hard to find. Anyways, after we heard the clicking, we stopped, got under the car and wedged some crap where the bushing would normally go. After that it popped into nuetral and the clicking stopped. My question is, was this clicking caused by a dry trans, were we only 1/2 way into a gear or did i get f'd and bought a trans w/ a bad gear/syncro? I'm finishing everything tonight so any help asap will be helpful.
Thanx.

the clicking is probably due to the lack of transmission fluid combined with it not being in neutral. after i put my lsd in the tranny wouldn't go into gear until the fluid had a chance to cycle for a while, and after that it was still a little rough for a few hours of driving. drive it like yer breaking it in for 1-200 miles just to make sure. worked for me.
