Default Tranny question

I bought a tranny from a user on this board, and we just got it bolted it up after completing my swap and it won't shift into fifth gear or reverse. The car has NOT been started, and the tranny has NO fluid in it yet. my question is, once the car is started and the tranny is used is there a possiblity that fifth and reverse will open up??? are the gears trashed and i should change them now?? any suggestions - thanks in advance.

Sometimes without lubricant or with low lubricant in the tranny, if you try to shift into a gear and you hit the top of one of the teeth on the gear, it won't slip into that gear. Try putting the car in a lower gear and rolling it a little bit, or just put fluid in it and start the thing up.
