Default B16 vs. B20

I have a 90 DA hatchback. I know that the easiest swap for my car is the first gen B16A but, I was wondering if a B20 with the short geared tranny that comes with the first gen B16A would be better? I know that the B20 isn't VTEC but, would it be comparable? I haven't heard much about this swap but, I figured I'd ask. Besides, I have a friend that just blew his motor in his CRX and he is getting a B16 in it next week and I need something to beat him.

IMO i would do the b20 plus b16 tranny... get a itr LSD why your at it too.... cause later you can turbo it! probably less miles than the 1st gen b16 too

Does anybody think it would be faster?

one word torque

something the b16 lacks

i would rather have b20 with b16 tranny

the swaps would probably end up nearly as fast as eachother and the b20 swap would be cheaper, and its true less aftermarket support but turbo's always an option. b20 parts are pretty much same as b181/b parts.

I was planning on turbo charging it anyway. I guess that would play a big factor in my decision. Would it be better for turbocharging?

b20 would be better, but remember to at least use a block guard since from what i hear the walls are pretty weak. but i dunno perosnally

b16 + 8psi =

cable b16 complete is still relatively cheaper and easier to replace if anything happens to the motor. i think. its been a while since i've been in the market for a new motor.

but the first gen b16 will have alot more miles and will be a hell of a lot more beat up than the b20 imo. go for the b20 lots of torque and larger disp will help "spool up"

I'd go for the B20 for the lovely powercurve...

If you plan on boosting, get a B16. The rod/stroke ratio is almost perfect and provides a very high reving motor with the potential of boost. The boost makes up for the guttless lack of torque.

If you turbo the B20, you wont be able to rev it as high, and you risk longevity of the motor.

IMO, **** a B20 if you want the 2.0L bottomend. Get yourself a Dart Block or Resleeve a GSR block with some Darton MID. You'll have a way more beefy block than a B20.

If you get the Dart Block, and you want to boost. Hell you could prolly boost up to 40 Psi on that thing, if the rods could handle it.

true the b16 gives you a higher rev limiter, but with the great low end of the b20 you'd more than compensate for it. think of cars like the ford lightning great great low end but barely any top end with a low rev limiter, still kicks 13's. I think boosted b20 with a b16 short geared tranny will be a hell of a lot quicker...

ok ok ok...ill be the first to say it...how about a CRVTEC? if youre gonna do this and that to the motor, might as well spend a lil extra cash and build something where you dont have to compromise torque or low revving characteristics. ...just a thought.

whats yall opinion on boosting the B20?? I've heard because of the way the block is sleeved(4 sleeves "together") it is more prone to crack under boost and high revving(unlike the other "single" sleeve B-series motors)...anyone wanna touch on that subject??

I have a B18A block, crank, oil pan and pick up sitting in my garage but, the sleeves are really rusted. I was thinking about working with those parts but, if I want the block to last and be tough (possibly bulletproof, whatever that means) this is what I was thinking:

LS/VTEC:
Darton sleeves (bored to 84mm)
Eagle rods
USDM ITR pistons
have everything balanced, new bearings, block girdle, ITR oil pump, etc, etc...

Turbo:
Darton sleeves (bored to 84mm)
Eagle rods
JE Pistons
have everything balanced, new bearings, block girdle, ITR oil pump, etc, etc...

What is everybody's thoughts? It is kinda off subject but, still, a B18A block with a 84mm bore = B20.

b18c1 head wouldnt be the greatest cause since the b16a head flows better. the b18c5 head on the other hand would be a really good idea, the only set back is, the price for that head.
