Default b20 vtec rev????

i am in the process of putting a b20vtec together and i am using a b16a head with ctr intake cam and itr exhaust cam, using str gears, what kinda valve train should i be using to rev up? im not sure if im building up my bottom end yet, so how high can i rev this motor up to without killing my motor within that month? im looking to drive this motor for atleast a year also...thanks alot

the 84mm bore on the b20 (aka bored b18) makes the bottom end rather weak (Sleeves in particular). I would recommend going no higher than 7500 or 7750 at the most on a setup like this. if you want higher revs then look into an ls/vtec instead, tyoucan rev those to 8k with the right valvetrain without bottom end worries.

i know evewry one says not to rev the b20's to high but me, i take mine to 9000 rpms, and have been for the last 8 months just about every day. true, the motor may not last for very long but im not to worried about that right now, all i know is it it still running strong as hell.

the sleeves are THINNER and WEAKER than other b-series 81mm bore engines but that doesn't mean they are glass. Most people don't have these setups and will tell you about the "rumors they have heard" when they really have NO real experience with the engine. From my experience: 8400RPM daily, probably 5+ times a day and as many as 20 times a day.

Though you guys are right we have a couple stock sleeved CRVTEC's running 11.5-12.0:1 JE slugs at 84.25mm bore and reving to ~8500rpm with no problem on STOCK rods... These motors have been going for easily over a year now with no problems at all... They all have Portflow heads and are tuned via Hondata but are still nothing special... David has the one with 11.5:1 and Toda B's... On our Mustang dyno he only dynoed at 185whp (which is 10-15% under what you'll see on a dynojet or dynopack) and ran a 12.12@109 in his EG... It's nothing special but goes okay... Just my $0.02, Latez

You just aren't going to make power up there... Why do you wanna rev soooo high??? There's just no point... Take a look at even Erick's plot, they rev that motor to ~10,700rpm and it starts to lose power after 9,900rpm... It is possible to rev that high so long as you sleeve, go with aftermarket rods, etc. etc... but you aren't going to make the power... If you wanna rev that high, make power all the way up there and not have any torque go with a B16A... Just my thoughts again... Good Luck
