Default Which Engine

Which is a better deal when making a engine choice, a B16, a Type R, DOHC ZC, or a GSR B18? If either was to go into a 2nd gen CRX, which would give more horsepower, torque, 1/4 times, reliability, parts, and which would be easiest to work on and install? This would be for a daily driven CRX, also for the occaisional drag. Please post your opinion's on these specific motors. I'm sure this topic has been discussed. Thanks.

B16A - Cheapest, best bang for the buck
B18C - Torque
B16B - Saying you have a B16B
ZC - Nice upgrade also, but not as much power potential as the other motors

well the zc will be the cheapest, easiest, best bang for the buck. But I'd got with a b20/vtec myself but that's not on the list

I would say B18C for the displacement, hp, and reliability out of the box. I honestly don't liek the B16 all that much, I've never really been impressed w/ any of the B16'd CRX's or Hatch's that I've driven. The DOHC ZC would be my 2nd choice out of them b/c I already have one, and it's a cheap upgrade. The ZC should be pretty quick w/ bolton's, cam's, and N2O. Just my .02

I would say it has everything to do with the purpose of your hybrid, are you going to tour it? Drag it? Budget? Bragging it (I wish I had a 16B) etc. I tour my car and I couldn't imagine trying with a GSR swap...GSR is a pain of a swap too.

yellowcrx1991- Thats a great link, its worthy enought to print. Thanks.
4crx4me- What car does the B17A come from. Can you give me a little more on this motor (performance hop-ups, #'s, how much, where to get it). Thanks
SIRX- The B20 sounds good, and I'm sure there are a lot of CRV's in the junkyard, it just seem like the motor is a tad too big. Hows the hood clearance? If someone can get me information for this swap too, that would be great. Thanks.

This swap would be on budget, but I would hold out on buying things, and save money, if I was to get a new motor. This swap would be going into a HF (when I can find a good cheap one).

To answer all at once. Yes, great link
#2: B17A VTEC comes out of 92-93 GS-R's only.Very Rare. (COOL factor)
#2 part B: All B series engines interchange parts amongst themselves.
So all are equally easy to "build". Some start out "better" than others though! haha Example: B18C5 VTEC. lots$$$$$$ but, whooosh fast!
Not positive about the B20, could use a confirmation. Anyone?
But ,"most" B series engines all B16's, B17's, B18's, B20's share the same "external" dimensions, regardless of internal displacement. You B20 guys can flame if I'm wrong.

The B18A, B18B, B18C, and B18C5 blocks are all the same. The difference is the cranks. The B16A blocks are shorter than the B18 blocks, which is why you can't use a B18 crank in a B16. A B20 is simply a bored out B18, so it has the same external dimensions as the B18 blocks also.

I do not recommend using a ZC motor...sure its JDM y0, but you can get as much power if not more out of a D16Y8, which is much more common and cheaper, plus the fact that a ZC motor hasn't been made in like 10 years. And finding direct parts for the motor is almost impossible and you have to ak alot of poeple and take chances hoping to find parts from other motors that are compatible. Such as headgaskets and distrubuters can be hard to source.

deffinantly go for the b18..... i have 2 friends that went d16z6, which has pretty much the same #'s as the ZC, only MUCH more available and cheaper for parts... anyway, one is wantin a b20, while the other just wants DOHC VTEC... once you get the SOHC,, you'll get hooked onthat feeling, and want more, then you change to DOHC anyway.... i prefer the b18 due to torque curve, and if you go vtec b18, the numbers are higher than the b16 anyway... then again, i was a mustang guy b4 i got my hatch, so i'm a torque junky in the world of high rev 4-cylinders..lol... i'm doin the LS swap into my hatch within the month...

I've thought about the LS/VTEC, but aren't B16 heads expensive? B18 seems like they way to go, but it would be cool to say that you've got a Type R engine. And the Type R B18's are way too expensive and out of my reach.

yea, b16 heads aren't cheap,, BUT, go ahead and do the regular b18 LS swap,, then you've got good power and torque out he yin-yang... later on when you're into some money,, do the b16 head swap... then you'll have LS/VTEC... it's much cheaper than a type-r swap with identical #'s, and it lets you still have a strong car until you get the money for VTEC..

That sounds like a good plan. Go LS swap then add a head later. The little CRX will rock.

Or junkyard turbo a Y8....more power than most stock B-Series swaps, plus you don't have to convert anything.

Beats pulling a motor and tranny out then paying 4 grand for the swap and mounts (plus labor).

If i had a civic, that is what I would do.

I'd go with b20(stock, turbo, or vtec).

I'd go with the b18c(1) but I'm biased . I love the extra torque and have had nothing but a great experience everytime I hit vtec . I know they are quite a bit more expensive, but in the end I think it's worth it. I just gotta pay off my dept now. And the install is a peice of cake with blown90hatch's harness. So good luck in whatever you do.
