yes I'm a noob at timing
Ok I am sick of this ****. I have been trying to get the timing correct on my engine but it keeps moving. Does anyone have any good tips on doing timing on DOHC nonvtec? I'll set it at TDC then put everything back together and try to start the car... It backfires and then I check timing and sure enough it has moved. What am I doing wrong. This is very frustrating. This is my first complete engine build and I got that all taken care of but I can't get the ******* timing set. This is embarassing.

What is your procedure?
What is your procedure?
u post how you are doing your timing, it will give us an idea of where in the process you're messing up! did you take the tension of the belt tensioner? did you position the #1 cyl in tdc? did you line up the cams, and reinstalled the timing belt? did you turn the crank pulley so that the cams gears mover CCW three teeth, and tightened the timing belt tensioner? try this link is for changing the timing belt, but they cover setting the timing!

I have been doing the same way as the c-speed site and it keeps moving. My head is milled a lil over 50,000 I'm wondering if that could make a difference. I line the mark on the crank with the mark on the oilpump. Then I route the belt over the tensioner and water pump and around the intake and exhaust cam gear being carefull not to move anything. It will appear to be timed at this point then I turn the crank about 6 times counter clockwise as stated in the Helms and the cam gears will either move or the crank pulley will be off.
your comments make no sense, line up the marks, tension the pulley and fire the engine. If you are off you have missed a step in the process. Give us more info so we can better assist you in your quest.

That will make a difference. Correct it with cam gears.

Try routing the belt over the exhaust cam first. You want it to be tight. The tensioner picks up slack on the intake side, so that's where you want the slack to be.
It also doesn't sound like your rotating the gears by 3 teeth and tightening the tensioner.

Ok I feel like a ***** bag! I got it to work finally. Thanks for the info. People probably laugh at this post but you were all there one time. You are not born with the knowledge to install a timing belt.
