Default shifted at 8K and bent valves??

i posted in the all motor forum, but i also wanted to know what you guys thought...

while waiting for a pm from another member on the board, i wanted to see what you guys thought.
I got bored the other night and did ONE run pretty hard, always making sure i shifted at 8K. Ran fine right after that for the rest of the night, but the next day, i had all the signs of bent valves ...and i dont get it, i always shift at 8K.

setup:
lsvtec, ctr pistons, stock 99 b16head, chipped p28

Car sputters (with barely any power) and gets worse the longer i drive. car sputters in every gear up to around 3k most of the time, some times higher. and every now and, it will back fire.

inconsistant idle...below 1K most of the time, feels like it about to die at red lights.

i was about to try different sparkplugs when i noticed that my spark plug wires were wet. it smelled like gas. only the right sparkplug wires were wet. When i took out the right 2 spark plugs, they were wet also, smelled like gas. the other 2 plugs were dry.

I know that i should do a leak down and a compression test, check cap and rotor, and change out the spark plugs.

so what do you guys think?

thanks guys.

my cousin missed a shift on my car last year. The idle was messed up and it backfired as well. The signs point towards a bent valve. You said the car was running right but the day after it started showing the signs. Checking the plugs and a compression test is the right thing to do. I think you should check the results first and post up to see what kinda problems it can lead to. Good luck.

Cunningham has done it, Kleinubing has done it, F1 drivers have done it at some point in their carreer, sackdz has done it , it's not uncommon. It's not that hard either, especially if you are on a track.

You are in 3rd gear all the way to redline
in a haze of adrenaile and excitement you shift really fast to 4rth
drop the clutch..... vroooom all the way to 10k rpms, oops (must have been second)

This what happens when you try to "guide" your shifts. Most common is the 5th to 4th (2nd OUCH) downshift. It is just a matter of pulling the lever down without "guiding" and it will go to 4th no problem.

I only do that maybe 1-2 times a week and it goes into gear to me. Maybe because is not an R but I've driven an R so hmmmm.
When I am on top of 3rd, and shift to 4th, I just pull the lever down. Nothing to it. I won't try to get creative and won't nudge it neither left nor right. Just simply pull it down.

Did that at the ITR Expo after passing someone.

But to keep this topic on track, here's a simple question. Are you sure all components of your engine setup are able to handle 8k rpm?

About a couple weeks ago, I went down to the dragstrip. I was fooling around and not paying attention to my driving and I mis-shifted. I went to 2nd instead of 4th from 3rd gear. My car instantly revved to 12,000 RPMs. Sounded cool. No check engine light, nothing. Still managed to pull a 14.551 on a bone stock motor. Anyways, my stunna buddy said, "hey if the CEL ain't on, run it again..."

I look at him with a wild stare. Then I said, "ok."
I went back down the track and ran a 15.3. LoL

Anyhow, I decided to call it quits. I drove home and hit VTEC a couple times. When I got closer, my CEL came on. The car idles funny and felt like it was gonna die. I did a compression test and came up with a 220, 100, 205, 160 across the board. Oooops...I think I fucked something up.

Took it to the dealership. They open it up and did leak down test and found out I had stretched valves. Beats the hell out of me? I got new valves under warranty.

I dont exactly understand how you can bend valves when shifting up because the rev limiter will always prevent you from over revving on the upshift. but a leakdown test would be a good idea

No... it won't. The stock rev limiter is a fuel cutoff. If you're driving in gear, and reach redline, the limiter simply stops the fuel flow. If you miss a downshift (something like 5th to 2nd), the rev limiter can do nothing to prevent the mechanical problem of the engine spinning faster. Basically, the car's moving, and the wheels are turning. The wheels are connected to gears in the transmission... which are connected to the flywheel and engine when the clutch is engaged. The engine is forced to spin by the moving car and gear ratio.

it's the fact that they actually shifted down instead of up.. ie 3->4 became 3->2
