Need help from So Cali people
Either so cali peeps or people that know about smog, and i mean really know about smog. Currently im saving for boost of some sort, most likely turbo. I will not be getting this anytime soon due to the fact that i dont make all that much money. What i would like to know is, what can I do as far as engine work goes that will not effect smog? Gimme some opinions plz.
if you want to be sure baout it i know that there is ONE kit that you can buy that is C.A.R.B. approved and is smog legal. its made by greddy i belive. . . i think anyhting other than that is not going to technically be legal. hope that helps.
If you're looking for engine work, then all parts need to be certified with an EO (Executive Order) number. I believe jonoknut is correct that the Greddy turbo kit is legal as sold (no intercooler, no blowoff valve). In general, porting is allowed, but you may fail the functional test if the programmed fuel maps cannot compensate enough for the change in airflow, which would directly affect the emissions.
For simple bolt-ons, you could try performance air filter/intakes, headers, cat-back exhausts, ignition systems, but they won't compare to even a simple turbo kit in power adding, and some of those, such as the header, you won't be able to use with the turbo.
Keep doing your research and come up with a plan in how you want to add power to your car, otherwise you'll easily end up spending 2x-3x more than you wanted.
