issues running 8.5:1 not boosted yet??
i may be purchasing a very well built d16a6 motor buts its compression is 8.5:1 right now however i will probably not be putting a turbo kit until christmas time...so i was wondering how this would affect the engine/driveability being that it is my daily driver..any suggestions??
just advance your timing a little. you will be fine.
with that low of compresison you have a little bit you can play with in the timing area.
now once your boosted. PLEASE dont leave your timing advanced.

well i have some arp studs laying around that i was going to install anyway...any reccomendations on head gaskets that would bring this closer to stock compression???
sce makes one i think. and mr gasket has some as well. if your only going to use it for a little while till your boosted, i would go with the cheaper one.
If you use a thin enough gasket to get your compression back, you will alter the cam timing a lot, too.
My engine is 8.5:1, too (stock was 9.5:1). It's a little soft below 4000, but I've advanced the timing quite a bit (stock = 12 BTDC, now = 18 BTDC) and it runs good. I'm looking forward to the turbo.
