I put in an ACT clutch last night and during the install, I realized that I have a bad wheel bearing. I did a search and from what I read, they are a bitch to change out. Should I just buy a hub assembly and swap the whole thing out? It sounds to me like that would be easier. Anybody done a wheel bearing lately? I have to do about 8 hours turnpike time this weekend and I won't be able to change it until after that. Is it safe? Let me know what you guys think. I don't have a lot of time or patience, so let me know what would be easier, a new hub assembly or a new bearing. Anyone have a hub assembly for the front passenger side of a 99 civic? TIA

 

yeah dude.. Ive heard the same thing. Ive also heard that you should always change your bearings when you do a new/upgraded clutch, if the car is pretty old, then you can assume their shot. Bearing are a bitch, no doubt. Look at it this way, figure out how much a full hub replacement will be then go from there. New or used, i dont think that will be cheap. Weigh your options.

 

Believe me, I'm all about doing the easiest thing. I looked on partstrader and found some hub assemblies for $40 each, cheaper than a bearing. Problem is, I trust the Partstrader about as much as I trust a crackhead. Anyone have any hub assemblies?

 

AHHHHHHHHH dude bearings i only have the worst of problems... TRY it yourself, but dont damage an axle, you don't need a press but a hammer just doesn't sit well in my head. NEW HUB or a junk yard dude i dunno you might hear dif. from other people but i know that they suck ballssssss!

 

I had the same problem last year. Paid $41 for part, $70 for labor at Pepboys. You could do it yourself if you have a press. The mechanic had a handful changing it. So I think $70 worth the labor. I wouldn't get a used hub since you don't know its condition.

Pep Boys? Yikes! Thats scary. I agree on the hub thing. However, I'm sure some HT'ers have a set of good hub assemblies lying around.

 

Dude, don't underestimate Pepboys. I used to work there, I know which mechanic is good and which isn't. Every location has different people working there. I said 90% of the stuffs I couldn't do it myself, Pepboys took care of them. Well, it helps to have a friend working there, too. So far, so good. Nothing fell off yet. hehe

ANYWHERE I know a good mechanic I will take my car. I just know the Pep Boys in Lancaster, PA sucks ***!!!

Anyway, any hub assemblies out there? More opinions?
