that is your CV boot. Get used to replacing this if you have a lowered car. My axles hve been replaced like 3 or 4 times. Acura charges around $160 for parts and labor. I had a whole new axle swapped out for $110 at a different shop. It is easier to replace the axle than the boot. If you have power tools it isn't too difficult. After jacking up the car and a few bolts are removed, the whole hub and brake swing out and the axle will come right out. The wheel should be off when you do this to make it easier. You have to pull the old bot off and replace it with a new one and some lube. It is hard for me to describe this procedure, but it shouldn't be too hard to find it if you search for cv boot relpacement on the internet or look it up in a helms manual.
Odd... I sportlines and havne't had to replace my CV boots yet... 93k miles too.
160 for parts and labor is CHEAP!!! The axles are 80 each from carparts.com and labor is usually at least for 2 hours (at 50/hour for dealer). Most people I hear about have to pay 400 to have their axles repalced.

replacing the boot cost 40-50 bucks if you bring in ur own boot.
if you dont have one, it'll cost you around 60 bucks.
just look around. the asian shop usually charge less. pepboys and other shop charge like 100.
to install springs, it cost like 50 bucks. at pep boys, discount tires, its over 100. wtf?

thats a broken cv boot for sure.. it cost me 70 to replace 2 at the same time. its pretty easy to do but youll need the tool to tighten up the wire strap that holds that rubber parts in place. btw..that rubber piece is pretty hard to slide back on..thats why i took it to the shop the second time around.
This is your CV (constant velocity) boot. It houses the grease that lubricates the outer part of the half shaft joint. The key thing to look for here is:
1) how long has it been cracked
2) is it making a clicking noise when the wheel is turned
When all the grease has escaped from the boot, that is when you will hear the clicking noise. This means there is no more lubrication and could possibly be a dangerous situtation if it locks up. In this case, the entire drive shaft will need to be replaced. You can probably find one at a junk yard for about $180+labor. If you are lucky enough and there is still grease in there, you will only need to replace the boot. Most shops charge around $80-$100. This wear is normal after about 100k miles but if you live in an area where it snows (salt damage) then it will probably happen more frequently.
