i think i might be listing too hard but i think i hear a slight tick coming from the valve cover area. could this be my valves ticking? if it is what can i do to stop it

 

get a qualified shop or person to do a valve adjustment. see if that helps. you probably need one anyways.

 

might be from your injectors?

about how much do valve adustments cost? and how long do they take? to i need to take the head off?

 

i think honda here started charging about 75-80 bucks. all they do is pop off the valve cover to do it.....you may get charged for a new valve cover gasket, only about 8 bucks though.

probably no longer than an oil change. but the car should be completely cool....at least that's what my friend at honda says. OTHERS say that you want the car to be at operating temperature to set the valve lash. i prefer when the car is completely cool though.

 

thanx for that info. yea i think i shold get one anyways i have a 1st gen b16 head tha probabaly has never had a valve adjustment ever. a valve adjustment shold extend the life of my head correct?

head/rest of block. if you were to have a valve crash on the piston, this could cause damage to the piston. if they valve broke off, you could have severe damage to the cylinder wall. depending on the speed you do this at, the piston could crack, causing MAJOR damage to the internals of the block.

the noise is prolly the injectors, but get a valve adjust anyhow...it's never a bad thing to do.

Do the valve adjustment yourself - 80$ locknut wrench from snap-on and a valve cover gastet = as many adjustments as want. And as one said above it also can be your fuel injectors. If that doesn't do it then have a leakdown, you can't reseat these heads.

 

it could me your lost motion assemblies........they often go out in the first gen b16 heads. They make a ticking noise that wont go away and you have to remove all your rockers to replace them. They cost around $20-$30 a piece and you need to replace all 8 if you want to do it right..

 

i think i am just paranoid. i think i hear a ticking noise buti think it is just standard engine noise. its not even loud lol i am just being paranoid trying to fins **** that is wrong. but just to be on teh safe side ill do the valve adjustment for the sake of the head

 

Do the valve adjustment, it doesn't hurt.

Even take it to Honda and let them hear the ticking, they will diagnose the problem for you, could be the valves or not, even if isn't the valves, i'd still get the adjustment though.

 

Do it yourself I say ! ...seriously, if your ever going to do anything to your car besides changing your oil and filling your tires you need to learn to do this. After practice you can do it under an hour as a routine maintenance and you learn alot about the valve trane too.

 

VTEC engines tick. They all do especially highly modified ones. It is the sound of the VTEC rockers flopping around. Even after I adjusted my valves my engine ticks. I was concerned but have since listened to several other VTEC motors...they all do it. There are supposdly dampers that muffle the ticking, but maybe these go too? Adjust your valves its not hard and fear not if your motor is gonna blow, it'll blow and adjusting the valves won't save it.

 

mine was ticking bigtime. i had my buddy (honda-tecnician) do a valve adj. for 35 bucks. the tick is still there, but a lot less noisy. just do it, at least you'll sleep better.

 

Yeah they do tick a little...Every so often one of the domestic 'necks will hear my car and say, "dem dere valves needs justin bo" I'm like yeah thanks I'll look into it.

 

Your not alone guys, I gotta damn ticking noise as well. It was worse when i hadn't adjusted the valves. Also it was lacking some GO power as well. AFter the adjustment, the ticking noise is still there but the car is much stronger and pulls harder now. So I'm thinking its my injectors going bad. What are good replacement injectors. I heard DSM injectors fit but will they be too big for a relatively stock N/A D16Z6 motor?

 

i have the same ticking so i think im gonna do the whole valve adj. this weekend then if its not that then it has to be the injectors. i would also like to no good injectors that pump a lil more fuel then stock for a d16z6

 

If it's a d, valve adjustment is pretty easy. On b you have to buy a special wrench. Search there is a valve adjustment how-to on this board.

Be aware that if you do your valve adjustment and the noise stays, and start getting louder and louder by the day you could have a spun rod bearing. I know 2 cases of this happening to D series. When it starts it sounds just like your valves need to be lashed, and then you start hearing knock like crazy.

 

valve lash is very easy...find a 10mm box end or go to sears and buy a gear ratchet set, a flat head screw driver and some feeler gauges... intake clearance should be .010in & exhaust is.012in, turn the engine 1/4 turns clockwise from tdc and adjust in this order, cylinder 1,3,4,2 or just watch the cam lobes on each set and adjust when the lobe is pointed strait up... also a new valve cover gasket.

 

Isn't there always some slight ticking from Honda Engines? Everyone I've heard has the injectors ticking at idle that you can hear.
