main relay symptoms? Fuel pump not activating
Ok today is HOT like 80 degrees here.. and my car won't start turns over .. gets spark , started once but sputtered down and died... almost one other time but sounded really weak?? any suggest where should i start?? fuel pump isn't turning on
Sure sounds like the relay.
Purhaps your resoldering didn't hold? If this continues to happen, unbolt the relay so it hangs down where you can easily unplug it. Then if it does it again, you can either yank it out and let it cool off, tap on it to get it to free up, try another one (if you have a spare)...
I'd be willing to bet its just the relay.

if you don't hear the relay clicking (to charge the fuel pump) when you see your CEL come on at START, then your relay is most likely the problem. if the relay doesn't click, your fuel pump won't charge and your car will definitely not want to start.
i had the same problem this past week....do this. do you hear the fuel pump going on? if not, check to see if there is power going back to the fuel pump. if there is power than its your fuel pump that went OUT. i had the same problem, motor would crank over and fuel pump would go on for a sec or 2 and the motor would run for about 4 secs then die. then i would crank it again and the fuel pump would not come on again. the fuel pump was craping out and it finally did. put in a new fuel pump and that sucker came right on and kept running
there is a online pdf manual somewhere to test power going back to the fuel pump. i made sure my relay was good using a ohm meter. fo shizzle my nizzle!
let me know if it was the fuel pump!

i've had this problem since i got my car (89 CRX Si), it never happened once on my 89 DX hatch. I got a new relay and it still happens occasionally on hot days. I also found out that the fuel system gets hot and pressurized when sitting and it helps when this happens to take off the gas cap and let the excess pressure off and the car starts almost every time.

Yeah, It probably is your main relay. I made an appointment for July 7th to have mine replaced. It acted up a little bit last year with the no-starts, But it is starting to die right after I get the car started now. Interesting idea on taking off the fuel cap to release the pressure, I'll have to try that.
mine just periodically, won't let the car start, somethings I get out to take out the ecu fuse, then put it back in to start. So, I guess my main relay is going out too.
ugh fuel pump wont be a fun task huh :-) the soldering was done by proffessionals.. and its been working ever since.. would it be the fuel pump even if i never had a problem once its started past 1000 rpms.. always good fuel when getting on the car.. is that what happens when the fuel pumps on its way out?? i had a bad idle for a while.. its low 500 and sputters up and down
OK wow .. after prognosis.. i'm stumped!!!! ok i was playing w/ the key.. i would hear the relay and the pump wouldn't turn on sometimes.. never can tel when it would want to.. so i pulled the car up to my garage.. and it started .. then i turned it off.. turned it back on and it didn't start and NO fuel pump sound.. !!!the relay is clicking.. and i just had it resoldered at my dads work (welding ) its very sparatic?? fuel pressurizes ok.. whats the deeeeal?
clicking ALL of the time or everytime it should be? ie. does it sometimes click over and over again, or JUST when you turn the key to start the car?
if you do hear the relay clicking over and over again on occasion (my car was doing this until i replaced the main relay), then you need to forget about your old relay and replace it.

Hey, thanks for that referral...much cheaper than the dealer. However, I also have a question regarding the relay. Is a "fuel shut-off relay" the same thing as the main relay? I called a couple parts stores and that's what they're coming up with.
I'm having the same problem and my relay is resoldered too, but my question is about your gas tank vent. Someone said something about the gas cap, when I did my swap we bypassed the gas evap can and just capped off the tank vent. Did you do the same?
