Tachometer installation on 89' DX...
I am going to install a small 8K tach gauge and am wondering if there is a way to wire it directly to the ECU?
Or, is there a wire I can tap in to or use that goes to the gauge cluster?
I am only trying to avoid running the wire through the firewall to the blue wire on the ignition unit inside the distributor.
I am asking because I don't want to distort any signal going to the ECU that could cause my engine to stop.

just go off the tach wire going to the cluster, when you pull the cluster cover off on the left hand clip on the far left you will see a blue wire, thats your tach wire, just tap into that and you have a signal, and then power, ground, light and you are set.
notes: left side clip, 2nd pin blue wire, then hook power, light, and ground and your set

what about those std owners? there is no tach wire runnin to the cluster is there? (shouldnt be since theres no tach)

I wired it up and your directions were perfect.
The tach works great and was very, very easy to setup.
Now I can see that I don't go above 5500RPMs even though my engine sounds like its going to squeel to death.
Yes this is on a DX , no there is NOT a stock tach and the blue wire (has little silver dots too) is the second pin from the left. Learn something new every day.

ya i have a 89 dx also, i dont have a tach either kinda sucks but no biggie, i shift around 7500 or so, basically i shift when it sounds like the cam is going to explode.
Not to flame but that sounds hard to believe, at least in my car. =x
This is the tach I bought:

The engine is screaming at around 5500RPMs =\
I mounted the tach on the upper left corner of the gauge cluster housing at about a 45 degree angle.
It took all of about 25 minutes to install and so far works great.

i had problems with my tach when i used the tach wire running to the guage cluster. the tach would get very bouncy and the only way to solve it was to unhook the aftermarket tach and hook up the stock tach. i even swapped igniters to no avail.
one of these days i'm gonna tap the wire right at the distributor to see if that will work better.
just an FYI.

The installation manual for my tach said to watch where you ground because you can pickup ground noise.
It suggests grounding to the body or steering column, and if you see the needle bouncing then you probably have a bad ground.
Also, again not to flame, but why would you hookup a tach if you already have one?

i got it for free and it has a shift light. the main reason for it was the shift light.
i gotta hook it up again (since i removed my dash) so i guess i'll try a better ground point. thanks for the info!

when i say i shift at 7500 i have a chipped pm6 ecu (mpfi conversion). I have a 8200 rev limit (motor has only seen that once). thats why i stated that.
or you can do what i did just put a cluster with a tach in the doner for my cluster was a 91 integra just rewire it and it works perfect that is if you want that clean sleeper look it is all in what you want
