Default What is the interchange on 5th gen base 5 spd ecus?

Bought a write off 98 for $5000. There is a lot of minor body damage all over the car, and left front suspention damage.

My problem is that the ecu and the steering column are gone. I was told that a 97 ecu wont work, but 98-01 are interchangable. I called a few dealers and found that the part numbers are different. I was only able to locatea 00 with a coded key. Can anyone tell me if it will work in the 98? There are no refunds or returns if I buy the 00 ecu and key.

Thanks for the help.

A 2000 ecu will work. I know of no reason why a 97 ecu would not work.

if a 98 works a 97 should right? Ignore the fact that all 96+ are OBD-II, the 97 & 98 models are identical, while the 99 & up are identical... with only minor changes between those two groups
