Sold something on ebay, buyer is asking for VIN, is this ok?
I sold my console on ebay. The buyer says he is from a shop and is rebuilding a car that was in an accident or whatever (on cell phone didn't get all details). Anyway, he says the insurance company needs a VIN and a bill of sale. Am I making myself vulnerable by providing my VIN to him? The buyer is in California and I am in New York.
can you ask him to give you the info of his insurance co. which require the vin, and contact the insurance co. directly and tell them all info (like vin #) they want.
by doing this....you can avoid letting him know your number but also helping him in the request by the insurance co.

Agreed, great idea Oscar...
And if this guy who is making the purchase really wants the stuff and understands our positions then it will all work out in the end Dave.

If you give the insurance company the VIN, he can easily obtain it through them.
I wouldn't worry about it, I'd just give it to him.

FWIW, I had to go in search of VINs when rebuilding my R for parts that I had acquired in order to get a new title, so it sounds like a legit story to me and I wouldnt worry about it, especially since hes in California.
