Burning Oil
hey everyone, i got a 93 prelude si... i was wondering how much oil do your preludes burn? How much is normal? I change my oil every 3000 miles and have 110k on it and was wondering if I am burning too much oil
haha, mine burns a quart and a half a week. 93 Si also but i have 144K on mine and it started at about 130K and gradually got worse. apparantly it's a common problem amoung our engines. piston rings/cylinder wall would be the culprit. i'm working on machining mine in the next few weeks.
i would be careful about just replacing the rings alone. i don't know for a fact that it won't fix your problem, but i know at least 2 other people with our same problem in the H23 that replaced only the rings and it did not fix the problem due to the damage on the cylinder walls. this is why i'm rebuilding with new sleeves, pistons, an 89mm bore and rods while i'm at it. i'm also having mine done by GE.

I just got my engine back about 3 weeks ago from having it rebuilt. I had the same problem with my Si....buring about 2 qts every tank of gas! I talked to the guy that did the machine work and he said the rings were the biggest problem but they wouldnt have solved it bc the #1 cylinder was worn pretty bad. Best to just go ahead with the machine work and sleeves.....better to be safe than sorry

i tried a lot of things, oil additives and some other stuff you pour into the cylinders, let it sit overnight and start it up that is suppose to break loose the piston rings if they aren't expanding to the cylinder wall. in the end it only smoked more. the only solution i come up with was a rebuild. sorry i couldn't give you a cheaper answer.

I paid $1700 for a long block assembly. Im sure if you have the time you can just get machine work done for a little less. But then while your at it you might as well throw a new clutch in along with all new seals and gaskets. Any any other nit-picky things. I pretty much replaced everything and spent just under $2400. Not to bad.
i had a problem similar and so did another chap may be due to another problem read this thread https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=516742
to continue with the oil consumption problem my lude took a turn for the worst yesterday. I've been burning for a year and i was up to 2 quarts a week. Monday i checked my oil and it was full. Wednesday it started sounding loud, so i checked it again. I was three quarts low. sounds like BS, but it's true. Now i have the worst metal grinding sound accompanied with the loud squeek sound of a belt problem, only both of the sounds are coming from the block. I'm towing it back home this weekend to take it apart and it's getting sent off for a complete block rebuild. This will run me $3,000 for rods, pistons, sleeves, all machining, and installation of the rotating assembly. Just a heads up for what may be in the future.
