yes you do need a VTEC tranny; i would reccomend an ITR tranny
EDIT: you could use an LS tranny but then you wouldnt be getting the full potential out of your motor thats the problem i made when i did my conversion i never bought a VTEC tranny and now since the gearing is so long my car only pulls hard in first and second

tech you dont need a vtec tranny...will it perform better w/ a vtec tranny? the answer yes....my recomations are a b16 or r tranny w/ the lsd. A gsr will work, but not as well as a b16 or type r....they help hold you in the higher powerband while the gsr is alright and the ls just downright blows because of its tall gearing...anyways hope that helps ya out a little

Currently I'm still using my LS tranny on my new LS/VTEC and it sucks 
Make sure you find the right one though, depending on your driving style.
I'm getting the S1 with a LS 5th gear so I can have the acceleration benefit + good highway gas mileage
