Does the VSS affect vtec???
Ok, i tried wiring the vtec on my b16a and i dont hear or feel anything... however my check engine light is on and its giving code 17 which is the VSS... i dont know why its giving that code because the spedometer still works fine... i did check the speedo cable and its lose, it doesnt have the clip for the cable to stay in place but it doesnt come out..
any help??
thanks

Before you replace the cluster, make sure this screw is in and tight.
The screw in the red circle.
Make sure also that ALL the screws on the back of the cluster are there.

Thanks guys, i will check out the cluster and try to get a clip for the cable... i hope that fixes my problem... i still havent heard vtec on this car and im anxious to see what it can do... hehe... one more question, if that screw on the cluster wasnt in and tight, shouldnt the speedometer on the cluster not work??? my cluster still reads the speed...
The Cluster will work fine speedometer.
Only it will throw the VSS because the ECU can’t find the signal.
You should be fine after you get the pin and tight that screw on the Cluster.
That was my problem I just realize that because I saw that screw was lose
I bought a new cluster

Your speedometer works directly off the speedo cable.
That screw has no effect on the speedometer.
It is there only to connect the VSS inside the speedometer with the ECU.

Ok, i placed the pin in there, but it seems not to be stayin in place... i tightned all the screws on the back and its still throwing me a code.. mynext step is to replace the cluster.... i got an extra one anyway...
thanks....
thanks....
Ok... i replaced the cluster and still the same problem.. however today i noticed that speedo cable did not want to stay put even after i raplaced the pin.. i got a light and checked why.. arent we supposed to change that plug thing on the tranny for the D series one??? that might be why the check engine light is still on??
maybe that screw is making my vtec not switchover, hmmmm... im gonna go check the cluster, the speedometer works just shakes a little bit... but ill check that screw, im not throwing any codes though, how do you take the cluster off, never took it off, i know there are two screws at the bottom, are there anymore?
Your speedo is working right? And you weren't getting a VSS code before the swap right? My guess is that you don't have the VSS signal wire to the ECU in the correct spot or the wire running from the cluster to the eCU is messed up some how.
for me.. i dont know if the VSS code was there before the swap because i got the car with the swap... i am running the pr3 ecu but i guess ill try the pw0, i jhave an extra one layin around.. im still thinking that my problem might come from the transmission speedometer cable socket thing...
Not to et in the topic, but i am about to run obd1, and i need an electronic VSS right? If I dont have one, then VTEC will not engage, correct? TIA.
ok well since your speedo works, we know it is an electrical problem. do this: unplug your ecu. take an ohm meter or continuity tester and see if there is continuity between the bolt that is pictured above and pin B16 on your ECU harness. if there isnt a complete circuit, then its time to start looking for broken wires, etc. HTH
The screws that hold the speedometer into the cluster. These screws make an electrical contact with the flexible circuit on the back of the cluster. If one of the screws is loose or missing, it may not be making the connection needed for the VSS to work.
