grey plug b16a1???
i got a b16a1 today it has cable transmission, but it has grey plugs and one o2 sensor so that means it is obd1. so i'm thinking one of 2 things has happened, either the engine supplier put a cable tranny on to what they thought was a b16a1 but the motor is really a b16a2, or, it is from a 1993 acura integra xsi from japan.
so i'm just trying to figure out if i should copmplain to the engine supplier and try to get an obd0 one, or did i get a really good deal. the tranny is a ys1 non lsd. any help would be great thanx!!

so i shouldnt go back and complain? i'm putting it into my 91 crx and so i guess i have to get either an obd1 conversion harness, or get a pre obd distributer and injectors.
how does the ys1 compare to the s1 or y1??

Nope, don't complain at all. You're right about converting your CRX to OBD1. The YS1 tranny is the same as the Y1, but you can use the syncros off from the newer B series trannies if your YS1 tranny syncros goes bad. I got my YS1 tranny from the old school GSR
.

No no no, you should not complain at all. What you got there is a JDM 170 hp B16. Sure, you will need to convert your car to OBD1 but if you do, you will get the full 170 hp out of that motor ( given you also use the JDM OBD1 PR3 ECU) and everything is wired correctly.
Just get one of Jason's (90blownHatch) conversion harnesses to make it an easier process. Or you can sit there and REPIN the whole dang ECU to OBD1 like I did on my own vehicle. I wouldnt bother doing that now that I've used Jason harnesses on various customer's cars and my own.
The biggest reward for going OBD1 ( besides 170hp vs. 160) is the fact that now you dont have to worry about trying to locate that dang OBD0 DOHC VTEC distributor if it fails. Another advantage of going OBD1 is you can always go AEM EMS or Hondata later if you want to get serious.
Also, the JDM cable "YS1" is geared more like the JDM "S1", not "Y1". The "Y1" was geared a little taller for the CRX's lighter weight. I love running the "S1" or "YS1" cable trannies in my hybrid CRX's for quicker acceleration.
Please note that the U.S. 92-93 Integra LS cable trannies can also be called the "YS1". I believe for the 90-91 U.S. Integras, they had the "A1" LS cable trannies.
Someone correct me if Im wrong, but from experience this is what I have found.

thats what happened to me when i did my first swap a couple of years ago. I got a 92 b16a with grey plugs, i just used the injectors it came with and used an 89 CRX Si dizzy and used my 89 O2 sensor and it ran fine. Just remember if you get a clutch you will need to get one for a DOHC VTEC del sol, 99-00 Si, or 92up GSR/LS integra and not the older 90-91 LS clutch. I take it you got a whole swap package so just use the ecu it came with and stay pre-OBD for less hassles. Good luck and enjoy

FOR YEBABEE...........How were you able to use the injectors that came with the OBD1 engine package if you were running the stock OBD0 dizzy? I hope you elminated the injector resistor box and "gang" plugged it. You will also need to change the injector plugs.
You said you used the original single wire O2 sensor off your stock motor? That single wire O2 is NON heated and is placed too far downstream in the downpipe of the OBD1 package. You should use the 4-wire O2 that package came with.
Like I mentioned above, get one of Jason's harnesses and go with OBD1. You have everything there. The OBD1 ECU too right?
Don't half-*** that 170hp package with "preOBD" stuff and using your stock O2 in the wrong location. There is no disadvantage of going OBD1. Let that package run the electronics and sensors that it was intended for. Use the OBD1 ECU, injectors, and sensors.
You can still run the OBD1 dizzy, ECU, and 4-wire O2 your package came with and keep your resistor box. You just have to transfer the OBD0 injectors over to your engine. That way, you dont have to re-wire the injector plugs and eliminate the box.

the obd1 injectors ran fine in my 89, i even used 440cc obd1 RC injectors later when i had my turbo kit on. I don't know why it worked but it did, i just cut and spliced the injector plugs from the harness that it came with on to my Si harness. For some reason i don't know why, i only used one O2 and never threw a code for the second O2, i just used a 99-00 Si DC sports 4-1 with the original O2 from the DX. I mean if you want to go OBD1 go for it, but if you got the pre-OBD ecu and your car is an Si (assuming that because you can use the Si injectors, O2, and Dizzy) you will have everything there, otherwise you will need an OBD1 ecu and the harness.
"handcommand" thanx alot for your info. it helped alot. so the obd1 b16a1 has 170 hp? thats awesome, but i am still torn by switching over to obd1, it seems pricey. that harness is kind of expensive isnt it? also i already have a clutchmasters stage 3 clutch for a 91 integra, should i see if i can find an s1 tranny so i can still use it?
That harness will cost you "peanuts" compared to what you will have to do if dont get it and run OBD1. Now you will have to find a OBD0 Dohc VTEC dizzy, a OBD0 PR3 or PWO ecu, and still, you will need to deal with the two NON heated o2 sensors that the OBD0 electronics looks for. If you have the single 4-wire O2 downpipe from your package, I say convert to OBD1 and be done with it.
I guarantee you will have more headaches later if you stick with OBD0. Ask many people who have OBD0 swaps. Those Vtec Dohc dizzys go bad often and are hard to find. My shop has done many OBD0 B16's into Civic/CRX's. At least 3 of them have converted to OBD1 now because their dizzy sooner or later failed. They ended up spending more money in the long run, because now they have to get a OBD1 dizzy and ECU, and 4-wire O2, and downpipe, ( most end up getting a header).
You already have the ingredients to make this happen. Dont refuse to do it, just because you have to get an adapter harness from Jason (90BlownHatch).
If you were here in Minnesota, I'd trade you any day for a JDM OBD0 B16 I have in inventory for your JDM OBD1 B16
.
If you already have a ClutchMasters clutch kit, all you need is a 92+ Integra disc for your YS1 tranny. The pressure plate is the same. I would take a JDM YS1 tranny over a S1 or J1 tranny just because the YS1 would technically be newer.
For my customers, its up to them on how much they want to spend, but for me, I'll never build another 4th gen Civic/CRX ever again for myself with OBD0 electronics. OBD1 all the way baby!! Hondata and AEM EMS can be in the future also.
Plus, I'll never RE-PIN an entire ECU harness like I did in my B17 CRX ever again. I was able to do it without a hitch, but its not worth my time when I can just purchase Jason's harnesses. I wired that one before I heard of Jason. Now, for my customer's cars that convert to OBD1, I use Jason's harness exclusively.
A great time saver!! Well worth it and the benefits!
If you are still stuck on going OBD0. I will happily sell you OBD0 PR3/PWO ecu's and OBD0 header/downpipe with 2 single wire o2's.

Yes, the OBD1 B16 has 170hp, but has to be JDM. Not the U.S. spec B16. Like I said before, to get the full potential of that motor, you must use everything intended for that motor. The ECU, the dizzy, etc. And obviously, it must be wired correctly and running right.
Tow your hybrid to Minnesota, my shop will do it right for you. Don't take my word for it.....come see other customers that has had a "HAND COMMAND" swap done. They are extremely satisfied!!!

Hey Boi,
You should keep your motor I have the same motor in my STD running OBD1.
Its a great Motor and If it came with a YS1 tranny that is the ****!!! Very GOOD tranny if you don't have any grinds in any GEARS
. I got the same motor see my SIGH. Yes OBD1 is the way to GO. After you have OBD1 any motor will simply DROP In with out any problems. Just change dizzy. Wiring is not really hard get Jason wire harness and convert you car to MPFI if not already. I think you run the 4 wires and change the dizzy pin outs and you are set.

ok does anyone have a link on how to switch to obd1 using jasons harness? what all i have to change etc.
i'm not too far from minnesota i go there to pick up cars sometimes. its like 6 hours away.
oh and i got the obd1 ecu. not sure what it is called. still pr3?

LOOK at the ECU it should say something like PR3-XXX.
If it has grey plugs it should be OBD1.
as for the harness you need to contact him. check the sales board he should be their somewhere.
