Was your car really warmed up when you went to get it inspected?? You usually have to beat on it really hard to get the cat really hot to do its magic...or you can get that stuff at pep boys that guarantees to pass emissions...i don't know what its called but if you ask one of the sales people they'll show it to you...good luck

i had the same problem just last month......ive got a 94 gsr with I/H/E.....passed visual but i was getting really high HCs. Try doing these things:
-new plugs
-new cap and rotor
-new wires if they are old
-if you have stock intake/headers that will help too
-valve adjustment will help too
-if you have a friend to swap cats with, that can help ( if yours is old)
-sometimes a bad o2 sensor can give you high HCs ( those are pretty expensive to replace though.....like 150-200 bucks)
-a cheap cat can be had for about 70 bucks

Hi,

I would def run the **** outta the car, get it nice and hot. Try not to sit there idling too long in line, heh.

Try the fuel stuff.

I was able to pass with mine, but just barely on the HC. My mechanic said he was leaning it like 40% with VAFC, hehe. That would def help if you could get one.

high HC at idle or on the driving test?

either way you gotta make sure the converter is smoking hot! i mean beat on it until you get to the smog check place!

also try retarding the timing a little.........that will help.
