Default Getting a chipped P28 ECU, need suggestions on program to use.

I started off running real lean when I dyno'd the car but the overall result was a nice gain in the mid range where I gained 15 horsepower and 12.7 ft/tq. The top end stayed the same and the fields unit sucks for tuning since it does it by 1000rpm increments and the a/f cruve needed a little tuning in between the rpm's. We have the fuel pressure set pretty high (45ish psi) and my plan is to lower the fuel pressure and run a richer map. This will be done with the chipped p28 ecu. I need to know if anyone has a similar setup or has experience with these programs. I will also be switching out the Fields unit for a VAFC so that I can tune out by 100 rpm increments.

My current setup is a JDM B16A SiRII

-AEM CAI
-APEXi Header
-APEXi N1 piping w/ ES Oval Muffler
-AEM FPR
-AEM Pulleys
-CTR Intake Cam
-Fields VTEC A/F Controller
-Walbro 190lph Fuel Pump

Things to be addded before next dyno tuning session:
-Chipped p28 ECU
-CTR Intake Manifold (port& polished)
-VAFC

I will be installing a Chipped p28 ECU (socketed) with 4 programs to choose from. Mugen, Skunk2, JUN, and Vision.

This is the information that I found out so far on these programs.

Mugen: 5700 VTEC x-over, 9500 rev-limit -- basic program and runs rich but is best "overall" program

Skunk2: 5700 VTEC x-over, 9500 rev-limit -- very similar to Mugen but feels a little bit smoother in VTEC

JUN: 5800 VTEC x-over, 9700 rev-limit -- similar to Mugen but runs better on high compression motor with "big" cams, like Type R cams, and pulls well in VTEC

VISION: 5200 VTEC x-over, 9200 rev-limit -- good, but not as much power in VTEC like the other programs. subtle for daily driving and good for road racing use.

BLUE - before
RED - after

I don't think any of those program will run good with the mods you have.
They are made for wilder cams, and some high compression which you don't have.

Did you think about getting a custom chip?
There's few people on the board who do ECU chipping, Kenji is one of them.
He helped me out everytime I had a question I bet he has something like a CTR program available that would work well with you mods.

I would research some more but that is just mine opinion.

If you are 100% sure you are going to buy a VAFC, it really doesnt matter which program you choose. Just make sure you have enough revs to make power. Once you have a VAFC, you can alter the settings once on the dyno, so the actual specs on the chip arent really important, other than for the drive to the dyno. get what i mean?

Well my whole point of getting a ecu is because I was running way to lean for my stock one. Look at the a/f chart and you can see the range is way off of where I should be till we cranked up the fuel pressure. I know most of these programs run a richer map and then I can fine tune it with a VAFC when I do get the car to the dyno. I wanna a run lower fuel pressure for a richer map... wouldn't most of you rather do that?

Have you considered the s200 Hondata set up? $295 for the basic set up and that is really all you need. This way, you can completely tune it. $300 for a VAFC + $100(approx) for the p28 + $150 for the comp to be chipped(approx). That seems steep considering you can dish out $300 for the hondata and you already have the ECU. The only thing to add to that is the dyno time.

I run a Mugen program and I have my FP set at 32psi @ idle. I also have an upgraded fuel pump. @ 38psi at idle(stock) my B16 ran sooooo ******* rich. It bogged all the time. I have yet to hit a dyno and play with my FP settings to really tune. But when I leaned it out from 38 to 32, my gas mileage went up a whole lot.

Did you ever dyno the car before installing the program? Just wondering cause I was running pretty lean for what I have. My spark plugs where white and the car was not getting enough fuel.

The only problem with the Hondata is finding someone in Colorado that will take the time if they have the one you can tune with along with dyno time. No one here in the state offers hondata tuning at any of the shops, nor would I really take it to anyone eles than they guy I know.

As far as the cost it wont be too much, I'm getting a 'socketed' p28 with some programs for around $200 total. Plus I can sell the Fields unit and some projectors that I had to cover most the cost for the VAFC.

As far as you turning down the fuel pressure that's exactly what I want to happen to my gas milage and such. I'm in the mid to upper 40 psi at idle right now... if you look at the blue line in the a/f chart it's pretty lean and I'm even up here in Colorado with the elevation.

I've never dynoed. However after checking the plugs when I had my fuel set at 40psi they were black as ****. I then turned the fp setting down to 38(stock) and it helped but I still had some bog in there at partial throttle. Now that I have the fp set @32psi at idle, my gas mileage is anywhere from 25-38mpg. I only hit 38 once...but I average about 25mpg.

Here is eg6ajk's business. http://www.hyperducktuning.com He has a socketed p28 for sale with 2 extra programs of your choice for 165 shipped. I've bought from him before and all I can say he is a pleasure to work with.

and I can't view your charts...they are just red Xs.

I also forgot to metion I was running a Walbro 190lph fuel pump, but still on the lean side. Thanks for that line I will check it out later.

The charts should be fixed now...

We are running almost the same setup. My CTR intake cam should be in sometime next week. I am running a USDM ITR exhaust manifold instead of a header. Hopefully I can add a Header TEch header soon.

Let me know your progress man. Since we have such similar setups, I'm very interested in what you find out with the different programs.

PS...I have heard that for our setups, the J's racing ecu program is the absolute best!!!

Most of the after market chips we have seen increase the fuel consumption 40% as they run very rich at part throttle and disable the O2 sensor.

That adds up to a lot of extra $$ per year if your car is a daily driver.

Tuning the ignition timing is just as important as mapping the fuel for power.

None of the aftermarket chips we have seen are mapped for the altitude you live at. One of our customers (before he used a Hondata system) running at Bonneville (altitude 4000-5000 ft) burned up all 4 pistons running one of the programs listed in this thread.

The only downside of getting a Hondata here in Colorado is finding a tuner. I would defintaly purchase the product but dont want to get it if it cannot be tuned properly. Thanks for the info.

Doesn't the VAFC tune for partial throttle?
