ls/vtec which head is better
what is the best head to put on a 1994 ls motor. i want to ls/vtec i just put a ls motor in my del sol. but i dont know what head to use i want more horsepower but i also want it to be realiable. i heard from alot of people that the b18c was giving them alot or problems and the b16 was better to use. which is the best to use.or is there a better head to use.and how much does this type of swap cost and what all will i need.thanks
B16 head flow's a little better than the GS-R head.
i would go for a B16 head........
the ITR used a B16 head........only it's mildly ported from the factory.....

When I was looking into getting an LS/VTEC back in the day, I was told that the B16 head would be best because
1) It's an easier head to work with
2) It's more readily available than a B18C head
3) It's cheap!
The GSR head will produce more power than the B16 head, but for the amount of work and the price, a B16 head would be a better choice. This is what I was told anyways, and since I never planned to do the conversion myself, I never really looked into which head was easier to work with.
Oh yeah, a lot of shops will quote you low prices (anywhere from $1K to $1.8K) but in order to get a properly done conversion (where you can be assured you won't leak/burn any oil, and rev safely) it will probably end up costing you around $2.5K - $3K, and more of course if you plan to swap out any internals.

you're going to want to swap out the pistons because the compression is so low on the stock B18B.. and i'd get the GSR head or a B16A head and P&P it to ITR specs or better..
while the pistons are out i'd suggest strengthening the connecting rods, shotpeen them or buy new ones.

gsr head. the gsr head will give you slightly higher compression but it will cost you a bit more. the gsr head will not require anymore work than the b16.
so how much would one expect to pay by the time they finished the conversion? assuming the individual went all out and got the gsr head and new pistons and rods? thanks
I'm almost finished putting mine together for FI, but here's the price list:
complete b16 head (ie dist, tb, intake, and all sensors) 725
forged rods/pistons/rings/arp roddbolts: 920
oxide coated valves: 240 (overpaid-can be had for under 200)
R valve springs (used) 100
TI retainers: 140
Valve seals: around 10
same retainers
cam seals: forgot
valve job: waiting for that to be completed
new bearing set: 150
ss oil lines and plug fittings 36
oil temp and press gauges: 85
head gasket: around 50
A lot of this you won't need so it'll be quite a bit cheaper
I'm sure I forgot a few odd and ends. Also this operation is not to tough. Get a helms and buy and nice metric set of tools and you'll be okay.
oh yeah forgot to add used gsr block girdle and machine work: 120
hope it helps
