Went out to change the plugs today. After taking off the little grey plug cover I noticed the nuts the hold the little grommets on the valve cover had worked themselves back up (happens almost every time I assume from loosening the nuts on the plastic cover). Anyways when I went to snug it back down one broke off and I don't have enough thread left to put the nut back on. Don't tell me I'm going to have to get the stud replaced . Is it possible for me to just be some gasket seal all around the grommet or is it that important.

Nothing is ever easy.

ok, it's One of the Four studs that hold the spark plug cover on right?

If so, You can just remove the valve cover and then use a 12mm deep well to remove the stud. No need to tap it out or stuff like that.

You might as well replace ALL of them while you are doing it. I had to do this on a friends car and after I replaced one, another broke. So just replace all 4. Common problem. Nothing to worry about tho.

You are not the only one. I broke off the stock strut bar stud a long time ago and the dealer told me I would have to drill it out and weld a new one, so I said fugg it.

 

just get a new stud...they are cheap and relatively easy to replace
i broke one of mine b4 and it took 5 minutes to replace

 

The studs are only a couple bucks, and screw right in easy. Not a big deal to replace it. Yes I hate those studs as well, I torque mine to perfect 7.2 lbs-ft each time in the right order and sometimes I still get one stripping from time to time. Thankfully though Honda made it very easy and convenient to replace the studs.

 

haha..yeah, I ran without one of my valve cover stud/nut for about 2 years. Just replaced it recently. It's easy. Just take off the valve cover and replace the stud.

 

That happened to me about a month ago...
I couldn't get the stud out, so I had to take it to Honda
They charged me $70 for that.

Without the stud and the rubber seal (ring), oil burst everywhere, and on idle, air is coming out of it.
Does this happen to anyone else?

Ouch.

 

It's happened before, I don't even keep that little grey valve cover on anymore.

Same here.....my dist side valvecover stud spins in place

I keep the wireplug cover off to save the hassle

 

Been running minus 2 forever now...at least a year. No problems here...cake replacement as well. Take off valve cover unscrew stud and screw new one in.

 

Yeah I did that a couple weeks ago. The studs around the spark plug cover are Honda part # 90014-PR3-000 and the gold nut that holds the grommet/valve cover is 90212-PR3-000

 

Thank goodness! I thought for sure I was going to have to get it tapped out by a machine shop or something. Looks like I'll cake it with a touch of gasket seal until I replace it and go ahead and do them all while I'm at it. Thanks for the info.

Honda-Tech has relieved stress once again.

 

i think i overtightened ( which i doubt ) the lower right hand nut on the valve cover. Any idea's on how to get that one off? I think the thread might have been crossed. During my car's downtime i wanted to check it out and remove the valve cover but that nut just sits there and turns. it won't come off. Any idea's on that ?
