OK, need help with the EMS, mase, falcongsr, any others can you help me?
Heres the deal:
Installed v.94 on the laptop.
plugged into computer and ecu to upload, click "connect" and the status box comes up, but nothing happens after that.
Car is off, I have power to the ECU. It says "Comms initiated" in the status box, so Im sure the computer is set-up for the connection. Am I another victim of EMS hell, or am I just stupid?

disable any palm pilot or wireless mouse. disable ANY program that runs off a serial port.

it was never used, but it is a "used" unit. Boomslang on here sold it to me. he never used it, so its still "new". persay
let me clarify, but dont take this wrong
just because something is not plugged in does not mean that com port is being addressed to some other device. A modem could be on com 1 and com 2 could be free.
control panel
modems
diagnostics
post what it says.....
also, have you tested the port with some other device to show its functioning? the ports may be disabled in your BIOS menu.

are you sure the EMS has power ? Can you hear the fuel pump go for a second when you turn the car on ? did you try com1 and com2 ?
mine had to be sent back, I bought it used but new as well.

I was under the impression that the EMS plugged into the serial port?
in that case its almost always going to be a com2 or 3 but never a com1 thats always reserved for modems
like he said make sure that the serial port is enabled in bios and make check the connection on the serial port see if its even communicating

ok, ill try everything tomorrow. Im too tired right now.
I know the EMS has power, because I tested the power wire in the harness, and its hot.
Fuel pump is unplugged, because my fuel system is not yet assembled completely. I just wanted to see if this damn thing worked, because Im starting up tomorrow or the next day, and wanted to know if I needed to get my old "hack" **** ouf of the closet...

car should be set on the "ON" position. If you already did that, make sure you have it set to the right port. If you dunno the port number, just go through all of them.

What are you expecting to happen after you connect?
Nothing pops up.
You need to bring up some menus/parameter windows MANUALLY to see any
real activity after you connect. There are no standard windows that will pop up
after you connect.

Also, I cant remember back in the day when i first got my EMS.
But try this, Go to ECU: In System Programming: and choose the .94, If still nothing try .89 or a different version....
and let me know what happens.
Also, Hit me up on PM cuz it could be one of many things and maybe not the actual EMS.....

Some more hints:
Check ends of the Serial Cable and make sure all pins are there.
Check the Serial Cable itself for any damage or crinks.
If possible swap out a different serial Cable.
Make sure all connections to the EMS "snaps" in. Do not force the plugs in.
Make sure no wire(s) from the harness is loose or crimped or cut.
Make sure your laptop is compatible with the program. (AEM's website as a list of system requirements.)
Make sure any power saving features or screen savers are turned off.
If at all possible, try to plug the laptop to a wall outlet. *This will save you alot of headaches trying to run base maps and tinker with startup and idle*
Make sure you don't have any programs that will address the Serial Port on.
In fact disable any programs from startup menu or go to "run" "msconfig" "startup" and turn everything off.
One last helpful hint. If you get it working and start the car up and it runs for about 30 seconds and shuts off, check the TPS Voltage Value.

Let me start off by saying go back to version .89 before you do anything. Version .94 is a nightmare. I had so many wierd issues with the unit when I upgraded to version .94. You can read my pains on the aem board. Not sure where you are in your process with this problem but feel free to im me. I maybe able to help.

done. where do you want it sent?
Anyway, We ran the FIN recovery, and no good. So Im assuming the Eprom is down. Mase and I couldnt figure it out. Nothing worked for any version. I have power to the ECU, my laptop is configured correctly, and my patch cable is perfectly fine.

Here is a post on the AEM board that you may want to read. It is about the Eproms going bad on the AEM units.
