CF hood guys - help! Can this be repaired.
Ok, i have a chance to pick up a FI CF hood for cheap. It has a blemish on it from a log that scratched it up when it fell from the back of a truck. Can something like this be sanded maybe and be cleared up somehow?
He says when he washes the hood when its wet its hardly noticable. Can I maybe sand this and somehow reapply a clearcoat?
Here is a pic....what do you think.

how??
how??
if its hardly noticably and under bout $150 i'd say buy it if not then save your cash and buy a new one. repairing it will probably cost more than a new cf hood
I wouldn't use clearcoat, thats not going to hold.
If you can sand off the top and not damage the weave, use some fiberglass resin and then sand it flush. Its not going to be 100% invisible, but it will be pretty good.
My front lip has been cracked twice from AutoX cones (CF spoon knock off), and I had chunks of the resin missing from it. I used fiberglass resin and you can barely tell even up close.
Costs like $10 at AutoZone for a huge tin of it.

I'd say find a clear spray epoxi (which is kinda like a clear coat) Spray it on there and let is dry. Then lightly sand it with low grit sand paper. Then buff it out to remove the small scratches.
you need the CF hood. if you dont get it, you will melt to a gallon of goo...
At $150... its no bargain. youre basically going to spend another $150-200 to reglaze the entire hood. did you think you could repair just a spot on the hood without refinishing the entire hood.
Seeing that you are considering this gem of a hood, it looks like youre tight on the penny. you can get it and go ghetto... or get it... and spend more than the cost of a new one to repair it.
the cost of the bling.

yes you can repair that. what will need to be done is the damage area will need to be sanded down as closeas you dare to go to the fabric. then you get some kind of resin. the fiberglass resin you can get at wallmart will work. mix the resin and fill the low spot you created by sanding with resin. if you have some excess that is ok. make sure you don't get any bubbles in it. you will need to cover the area with something. teflon coated cloth is great for this. i think you can also use some nice thick plastic....maybe some visqueen (don't quote me on that) alow it to dry either by parking in the sun or via heat gun. let it dry for at least 24 hours and do not remove the cover on the patch for at least 24 hours. then remove the cover and color sand (aka wet sand) the area down. take your time! go slowly and use high grit sand paper and check your progress often. once you have done the sanding have the hood reclear coated. or just paint it and allow the primer to fill it. personaly i'd paint it
Ok, for all the h8trs I will buy this hood, and i will fix it. I will let you guys know. Thanks for the guys that offered help, thats what i was thinking about sanding it down and using some fiberglass resin and reclearing that area.
Its not like a colored paint where I gotta blend it in with the surrounding area...its clear, it automatically blends!
