Default need some help identifying a nissan turbo...

hi, i got 2 turbos from a friend cheap. i wasnt planning on really using them, i was just gonna play around with them (take em apart etc.). well i gots to thinking and i said what the hell might as well use em. one of them is an ihi rhb5 from an earlier model probe. i dont really want to use this one though since its pretty small. here are some pics of it.

so here comes the point of this thread. i also have a nissan garrett turbo. and id like to know what car it came from? how much boost and power i can get from it on my d16z6? is it even worth keeping? i saw a guy on ebay a while back selling one and this is what he had to say: "You're bidding on a rebuilt Nissan T3 turbocharger that was originally equipted on a Nissan 300Z before they went to the twin turbo setup." the pics of the manifold are from his auction since that's what the manifold looked like before i took it off my turbo.

and a couple more questions. if u guys think this nissan turbo is worth keeping, can i get a different turbine housing so its not a weird 5 bolt? i'd also like to use an external wastegate. and how can i find out what the a/r is and the trim on the turbine and compressor?

Thats a Z31 T3 alright.

IIRC the stock wastegate actuator won’t work with the 5-bolt Ford t3 style turbine so you would have to go external anyway. Stock dimensions are: 60-trim Compressor, and 63 A/R turbine with I believe an 87 trim wheel.

I got a Nissan T3 just like that (except its external gate) but looks just like that. I have no idea what it came off of. All I know is that at 8 psi on my 99 Si with b16a2 i ran a 14.2@100.67 MPH, and i can constantly pull 100-101 traps

Im running that exact same garret turbo on my d16z6 as well. Im pretty sure it came off an 85 300zx turbo .63/.60(im not 100 percent sure on the compressor ar because some ported out the outlet so its no longer marked, if im wrong please let me know). Whats crazy about my setup is im actually using that internal wastegate. I had a local welder who is pretty good hack the wastegate housing off right after the o2 bung and weld a 3 inch flange on. Then i mounted the turbo with the compressor on the drivers side and used a pusher fan on the radiator to make room for the wastegate housing and downpipe. Going external gate would have definately been easier but I like my manifold I already and opted not to modify it. The bolt patern on the turbine housing is like no other turbo out there, I looked for a long time for a diff internal wastegate that would work and nothing is like it. If you are goin external you will need a custom flange to cover up the wastegate hole or different turbine housing. I am pretty pleased with the turbo. It does not spool as quick as a smaller turbo of course but the lag is not bad either, its a good compromise. Im runnin 9 psi right now and it pulls all the way to redline. When I tried to blow my old d15 before we pulled it the turbo layed down 20 psi with no problem and destroyed my stock clutch . If you want too see pics of my setup just let me know and ill take some tommorrow.

Chris

You could probably boost all the way to 20psi safely before you start to get too far from the peak efficientcy area.
