Default non buzzy exhaust

'91 CRX Si

Ok, basically, my car is too darn loud... my friends have nicknamed it "zero" because they say that it sounds like a Japanese WWII divebomber.

I'm running the D16A6 with intake and DC Sports 4-2-1 header, high flow cat,
2-1/2" pipes and a magnaflow muffler.
I'm not really so concerned with absolute volume, but i need something much less buzzy.

I talked to an import shop here in town that told me to look into having a resonator welded in somewhere after the cat. Now, to my understanding, that's just some kind of inline muffler, right? I've not heard anyone suggest this to anyone else so i don't know anything about it.

If that's a good idea, i'll probably use it in conjunction with a new muffler. I wouldn't opt for a new cat-back system, cause i've already got all the pipes and stuff... and i want it to exit in the stock driver side location... any suggestions?

I've been thinking on DC Sports or Greddy, i've heard that they both are relatively quiet... i'm not looking for all out performance... (i'm looking for "sporty")

I just need to find something that is quieter, with a deep tone (i.e. not the big oval shaped peice of sheet metal under the back of my car that's shaped like a muffler)

thanks in advance...

I too suffered from the same problem. I changed the muffler to a dynomax (I have used these in the past). The dynomax doesn't flow as good as my flomaster that was on there, but it is quieter. I have an exhaust cutout for the track. I also plan to add a resonator to reduce the buzz and drone from the exhaust. I was origionally going to use a dynomax bullet, but they don't make them any smaller than 3". Glass pack is out of the question, they are too restrictive. I have thought of using borla turbo mufflers since they are sraight through designs, but I don't know if therre is enough room under the car. I have been looking into resonators, but I want to see some up close and see if they are straight through or have some sort of blockage. Resonators are the only thing that seems sutiable since they are made for smaller than 3" pipe and will fit under the car easily. Here's a tip: the longer the muffler/resonator the more it will dampen sound levels. Now finding a straight through 16" in length resinator would be a dream come true.

i'm running a pacesetter 2.25" exhaust and it sounds great. nice and deep, and not even noticeable below 2000rpm. I live in ohio, though and after 2 winters it is beginning to rust.

your buzzing is because you don't have a resonator.
Trust me
I had a apexi n1 done and i kept the stock cat and resonator and it is still a little loud.
So just get a longer resonator.
What they do is that they restrict some air flow making your noise more deep and less loud.

yeah, i know that the magnaflow is supposed to be pretty cheap...
i plan on getting a new muffler like i mentioned above...
i considered getting an A'pexi N1 univerlas muffler w/the silencer and a resonator, but was afraid that too would be too loud.
I was also considering either DC Sports or Greddy to replace the magnaflow.

Well dude here's my setup, Header, Stock kitty, 2&1/4 Manny bent, into a Super Turbo. Out a simple 3 oval tip, clad in flat black, I love it. Very low volume below 3 Grand. If ya really want to supress the two stroke sounding buzz, install a resonator "Glasspack"after the cat. All it does is deaden the sound waves that create the buzz. You can put one on your existing system for about 30$ and that should solve your prob. Magnsflows are pretty loud but a resonator should quiet your car perfectly.

I have a Tanabe Hyper Medallion on my CRX, and it sounds great. It's not that loud at all, almost stock sounding. It only gets more sporty when I'm in high revs, and in VTEC. I can hear my intake more than my exhaust. I love it.

Any one know of any online sources for resonators. All I have found are huge companys that sell to wholesale automotive dealers. I need someone selling to the public.

the reason why cat backs are noticeably quieter, is because they come with an inline resonator !!!!

i talked to my freind, who is a exhaust guru, and he told me to goto a muffler shop and ask for a bullet, it comes in 2 1/2 - 3 inch in size, and just ask for one to be welded inline, if they dont have a bullet just tell him what you want and any exhaust shop can accomodate you, he said they come in 12 inch and 18 inch, they are about 40 bucks.

so if i were you i would just call a few places and get an idea, im thinking bout getting one because my car is insanely loud, i cant take it anymore.

wow, i really hope that it's that easy... just curious, you guys have quoted $30 & $40 a few times... is that for the part only? Or is that you're estimate for the part and labor total.
I'll still probibly get a new muffler 'cause mine is starting to rust around the inlet... but this will save me in the meantime....

THe bullet also comes in oval and I don't think that they make a 2.5 inch bullet in the round design, only the oval design making fitment harder. I could be wrong, but I got my info off dynomax's website. I'll call and double check.

Just in case anyone cares, i decided to go ahead and bite the bullet. I ordered a gold Apex'i N1 and will be getting the Dynomax Race bullet in a couple of weeks... I'll have it all put in at once, but i've still gotta order the Apex'i silencer.
I'll let you guys know how it sounds in about a month or so...
thanks for the help (i hope it was good advise)

I'm shocked no one has endorsed Thermal R&D's cat-back exhaust yet. My setup B16a w/AEM CAI, DC Sports 4-2-1 header, Thermal Cat-Back exhaust.

The car sounds amazing! Nice and quiet at low revs, it picks up a deeper bass as I climb to 4K rpms, and then when VTEC engages at 6K it sounds like an F1 car! I'm very pleased with the exhaust, if anything the engine, not the exhaust, makes too much noise in my little, no sound-deadening material '91 HB.

By the way, i wasn't trying to make a pun with the whole "bite the bullet" and the "dynomax bullet" thing. I just went back and read my post and realized that it made me sound like an idiot.

Ewww, i hate my exhaust too!

I have 4-2-1 header, NO CAT (there's the problem i think), resonator, 2.25 inch piping and ebay N1 muffler. It sounds so loud, i hate it. I'm gonna pick up a cat somewhere soon and put it on, hopefully it will help it.

Here's me revving so you can hear it: http://www.we-todd-did-racing....DE%3D

When I had my EG I had a Tanabe on it, Ported and Polished Head, DC Headers, etc... it didn't have the raspy sound... It did it before I had the head ported, but after that it got rid of the sound... so I guess it has to do with more flow?

I dunno, but for the record, it was actually an Apex'i N1 that i ordered, not one of the knockoffs.

I can't figure out if it makes sense for it to not sound buzzy after you get the head ported and polished... was it a b or d series?

HOW DOES THE ZC MOTOR CHARACTERISTICALLY SOUND? Buzzy? Just loud? 'Cause i've heard that it's a bit louder than the stock Si motor, i just have never actually heard one in person.

A B series will flow more than a D series since it is DOHC. I don't knao if that has anything to do with rasp or not. My car isn't raspy below 2500 RPM but above that it gets a bit annoying. B20 with 2.25" from header to tailpipe, no cat and a dynomax superturbo.
