what is closed loop and open loop?
i keep hearing this being said, what does it mean?... in order for my b16a to stop stuttering my car should be constantly in open loop according to hondata. What is it?
open loop is when the ECU does not respond to O2 sensor input and uses "maps" to determine injector pulse, timing, etc. In closed loop, the ecu adjusts to the O2 sensor readings. ie: open loop= cold start and during warm up- the engine needs rich condition to run smoothly until it reaches operating temperature. Open loop also occurs during wide open throttle and heavy load where more power is desired. During closed loop= warmed engine- ecu "watches" O2 voltage and adjusts mixture accordingly- this is primarily done to promote proper catalytic convereter operation and fuel economy. Proper closed loop operation will look like a sine wave on a graphing meter. Voltage will rise and fall between 0 and 1.0 volt as the ecu commands a (slightly) rich and lean condition. There's a whole lot more to this topic-
