I have a 97ex civ d16y8 engine and when I really push the car in the High 6000's My engine makes a louder noise than usual, almost like a blaring when I hit and only when i hit in the upper 6000's rpms, is this normal?? Also when does the vtec activate in that engine. Thanks to everyone (installed aemcai, header and exhaust)

 

the loud noise is called vtec, hence the y8

 

what does the y8 stand for and when does it activate

 

y8 is just the end part of the engine code (d16y8 - vtec). Other the other civic codes for that generation are y7 and y5 (non-vtec)
vtec is activated at 5700 rpm

lol my loud noise on my y8 turns on around 5500

 

Hey i got loud noise also at 4800 rpm

 

That loud noise is VTEC! It activates at 5500rpm on the Y8.

mine kindly tallks to me loudly at 51k and then throws a wild rage and flys down the street
