D16Y8 W/ Vtec? Help Please.
I'm looking to buy a car (98 civic ex) which should have a D16Z6 Vtec engine. The owner of the car had the engine replaced some miles ago and now it is a D16Y8. Normally, I would leave it at that, but what puzzles me is that the Vtec Solenoid is still mounted to the Y8 engine, and it still hooked up and functional, and it still has the Vtec ecu, but the engine code is Y8 and not Z6. The valve cover does NOT say Vtec also for reference (so I dont think they put the Vtec head back on).
My question is what will happen when it goes to hit Vtec now with the Y8 engine but everything else still set up for Vtec? Do nothing? Try to get Vtec out of a Non-Vtec cam? Hurt something? The father said his son has driven it for a year or more with the Y8 in instead of the Z6 and said he hasn't noticed a difference, but I would rather ask you guys. A D16Y8 is supposed to be a NON-Vtec Engine (as far as I know) and this is why I ask, but there are multiple sources that say it IS a vtec engine (Wikipedia) and that this swap will retain Vtec and actually run as good as or better than the previous Z6 Engine. What do you think?
Thanks.

96-00 civics either have the d16y7 (non vtec) or d16y8 (vtec). ek's never came with z6's...ever.
also y8's do not have vtec on the valve cover. you do have the correct engine for your car. it's prolly not even been replaced cuz that is the stock engine for that car.
if everything is working as it should, leave it alone. whoever told you the y8 is a non vtec engine is way way wrong.

Great, So it's the correct engine. I always thought the Y8 was a non-vtec... Also, it is a newer engine because it is super clean and has chalk writing on the side and intake manifold and in different places where it came from another car and has the miles, etc; written on it in chalk that they haven't cleaned off from the swap.. The shop who swapped it put the air cond. back in and all, and it looks like it was swapped right, runs good and purrs like a kitten, so thanks guys. I appreciate the input.
