Default O2 sensor?!?

Is there any particular reason why the Oxygen Sensor (O2) in a 96 accord is about $230 when the one in a chevy is only $20?
What's the purpose of the sensor, how do I know when it's time to change the thing.

$230. Thats outragous!! Unless the accord uses a wide band 02 sensor, which i'm pretty sure it doesn't, there should be an alternative.
