Engine dies.....very intermitent; could it be MSD?
Well last weekend, after i got the car tuned i drove about 2 blocks and the car died. Pulled off, car wouldn't start, couldnt hear the fuel pump priming. Waited about 10 mins, started back up, but then shortly it died again. If/when it started back up, the sec i thouched the throttle it died.
The main culprit being the Main Relay, the shop brought a used Main Relay to where i broke down and after it was put in it died again about 5 mins later, same symptoms. I waited for about 10 mins, it started up, and for the 10 min dirve to the shop and also about 10 minsi left it running when i got to the shop, it ran fine.
I didn't want to risk being stranded in 2 hrs of traffic to get home so i left teh car there...once again.
We were thinkin that maybe the used Main Relay was was bad as well. So, i ordered a brand new main relay to be put in, and it came in today, and the shop just popped it in.
About halfway there, the shop calls me and says that they left the car runnin for about 10-15 mins and that it just died. When they go to start it up, it starts up, but shortly dies again.
Now we've replaced the Main Relay, checked the grounds, and the distributor is new.
I have a MSD 6al with a Blaster SS Coil. Could this be the problem? Has anyone had similar expiriences? I just taked to the shop and we were gonna put a meter on the box to see if that was teh cause of the problem but when they went to do this, the problem didn't arise.
I was thinkin of maybe switchin back to stock, but i really like the peace of mind that the 6AL offer's with the ignition cuttoff.
Man.....when i finally think the car will be ready to go, sumthin always seems to come up.
Any thoughts/ideas/hypothesis welcome.

Hmm, possible that the ignitor is getting warm and taking a ****. Have you checked to see if you have spark or if your fuel injectors are firing when it isnt starting. I'm sure its one of the two if not both.
The prob isn't that its not starting, its that it starts, and then dies like 10-15 mins later, every time its been started. I doubt its the ignitor, the whole distributor has like 500 miles on it....but it was a remanufactued one. Damn shoulda just gotten a new one for peace of mind.
When an ignitor goes bad i was under the impression that the car would'nt be able to start period. Thats once its done, its done.
Could MSD's really put that much more strain on cap/rotor/ingitor?

sometimes whne an ignitor goes it will run for a second until it warms a little then crap out. do you know whats happening when its not starting, if you're losing spark, fuel injector pulse, or both?
Well when i talked to my mech earlier this evening they were trying ot get teh car to reproduce the problem again, but damn thing ran fine.
They said theyd call me back after they troubleshooted the problem some more. I dont think its a fueling problem really. It just got tuned.

thats the textbook definition of a failing ignitor. JUNK it!!!
try running with no ignitor.

Well i heard back from the tech today, they still havent been able to reproduce the problem. They just ended up checkin all grounds. They left it runnin for an hour waiting for it to die, but hasent done it yet.
Hard to diagnois these kinda intermitent problems.
Im thinking about replacing the new "remanufactured" distributor with a new oem distributor. Hopefully thats it, if i cant find anythin else maybe the MSD next.

Ok, here is what i have done thus far to try to fix the problem.
New cap, new ignitor, new main relay, and it still does it but now its a little different now.
AFter about 15 mins of running, the car doesn't die, but it will hiccup and while driving i can see the "check engine" light come on briefly out of the corner of my eye, and i can tell the engine is missing.
But it hasent died completely on me yet, it has been able to recover itself without me having to start it over. I don't knwo what else to do now. Im planin on puttin on a new rotor cause mine is kinda old looks a little melted but still makes good contact w/cap. Anythin else i should look at?
Im debating about puttin the ignition back to stock, the MSD came with the car. What is needed to get it back to stock wiring wise if i were to do so?
Or
I can get a new MSD 6al box see if that fixes it, i really like the safety spark cut-off the 6al offers, good peace of mind especially when u loose traction when i get on it.

I have a walbro 255 pump. I doubt its fueling related. The ignitor is new.
Its very intermitent.....it will be running fine one second and then another it will be bogging/bout to stall another. Any ideas?

check your conections inside of the distibutor it can be there
there is a way of testing the msd my 6BTM went on me before disonce the white wire from inside of the distributor and jump the white wire to a ground and when you take it off a ground it should throw a spark from the coil

I have taken the distributor apart and put it back to gether with new parts and stil does it. Sucky thing is, this problem is very intermitent, liek i drove for 30 mins earlier and it ran fine.
