Default NGK Spark Plugs....Everything You Ever Wanted To Know and More...

I thought I would clarify some information on this board. This may have been posted another time and if it has, I apologize but I want to share this information with all my fellow H-T members. I have read a lot of different information from some very reputable people from this board about spark plugs and which ones to get for boost, etc. So I decided to do my own research on the subject.

I have been researching on which plugs to buy for my D16 Turbo application (Should be the same for any Honda motor though) and I read from 1 person that the correct plugs are BKR7ES-11 (#2387). I read from another member that the correct plug I want is BKR7E (#6097). After reading conflicting information, I wanted to find out for myself. Boy, am I glad I did. I spoke with an NGK rep and he was EXTREMELY nice and very helpful. He told me everything I wanted to know and more.
Let me start but stating the difference in these two plugs.
The BKR7E has the "V Power" electrode and is not pre-gapped.
The BKR7ES-11 has the standard electrode and is pre-gapped.

So which one should you get? That is up to you but according to the techo geek NGK dude, you should get the "V-Power" model for a turbo application. He said they have found this to be far superior to it standard counterpart when it comes to forced induction. (If I had more info, I would post but that is all he told me) The pregap is kind of useless for our applications because they are pre-gapped too big anyway (.035). The techo NGK dude recommend .030 gap (as do most H-T people) for our turbo applications.

Now, this brings me to my next point that he started to talk about. That is the step at which you go in spark plug "coldness". Here, I am speaking for the D Series guys because that is what I know. Our plugs are the ZFR5J-11 (For the D16Z6 from 92-95 at least). He told me go 1 step colder for every 75-100 horse extra you make. So, for most of us that is the ZFR6J-11 plug UNLESS, you are in a warmer climate (AZ, FL, CA, etc, etc) or you are making gobs of power from a built motor or whatever.

Now, I also asked him about the racing plugs that NGK has. The plugs are R5671A-8 (part #4554). These are the racing plugs he recommended for the people with big boost applications. These plugs are non-resistor type and he said they could possibly interfere with the electronics in the car (for sure the radio but also things like the ECU?) I want to know if anyone has experienced using these and did you notice any problems with the ECU acting up?

Here is a link of this guys personal site that he gave me. I thought I would also share. Great info here plus excel spreadsheets on the NGK racing plugs!!!
http://ngkaz.home.att.net/wsb/....html

Again, I just thought I would share this information since that is the major purpose of H-T in the first place. Enjoy!!

Brad

we been using the r5671-a 10 11 and 9 for the longest time never interfered with the ecu or any of hte electronics. WE use the msd digital 6 as well to fire it off. Worked great.

bcp (stock 90-91 ls), zfr (stock 92+ ls?), bkr.. the ngk pdf doesnt really explain the differences. so is bkr better for boosted ls also?

Why should the GAp be so small for a FI vehicle? Isn't it the larger the gap the more tq? i heard that somewhere... Also, by going a couple of heat ranges colder, won't start-up be affected?

smaller gap is so the boost doesnt "blow out" the spark as easy, would be good to have some ign mods too.(msd, accel, crane etc)

good info man, ive heard so many things about plugs,,, ive also tried everything from the gay *** zex plugs to anything iridium, and to tell you the absolute truth the stock NGK bkr7e's are the best, for my Drag'd GSR, in my opinion.

you should check your plugs to see if theyre overheated (white). if they are then you should go a step colder and check your fuel.

So whats the difference between the BKR7E and BKR7E-11? They have different stock numbers. Also, what would you use for 2 steps colder?

The -11 are pregapped to .044. If you look at the above chart, it tells you.

Thanks, so what about plugs that are 2 steps colder that everyone tells you to get, yet they recommend BKR7E's which are one step?

For you they are 1 step colder. For me they are 2 step colder. Mine info above as stated is for the D Series guys (for once ). If you are a B Series guy, I will let someone else jump in.

Good call, they are white. Why should i check my fuel? ITs 93.

I am going to try and pick-up some Autolite plugs today 1 step colder then usual.

Good thread. I have used the heat range 8's before on my street car without any interferance in the electronics at all. For the 300-350whp level I use the 7's, for the 400-500whp level I use the 8's. I gap them .024-.028 depending on the amount of boost and ignition system set-up.

Also I like the pre gapped 7's since you dont have to gap the ground strap as much with them pregapped. Its not that big of a deal, but I have been using them every since our local supplier ran out of the standard 7's.

I think I'm going to drive the local Napa guy crazy and get him to order me 4 BKR6E-8's, BKR7E-8's and BKR8E-8's.

Gapping plugs ain't no fun!

<=== Lazy bastard.

My car was tuned with the BKR7E's left at the standard .035 gap

My setup is:

t3/t04e @6.5 psi
Hondata S200
440 injectors
Walbro 255
stock ignition
stock block

Should I gap it down to .030? If so, will it make any kind of difference? I checked my plugs recently and they were a bit white on the tips--my car almost overheated a couple of times. Other than that they seem fine.
