When I have my heater vents on fresh air and I beat on the R (taching out first, second, and some times third) I from time to time smell burning oil. At first I thought it was another vehicle near by, but I've come to realize it's coming from the R. I do lose about a quart of Mobile One with in a 3000 mile range, but I've searched high and low and can't find a oil leak. I know many of our Rs lose oil and some blow puffs of smoke at high rpms, but where does the burning oil smell come in at? Like I've said I can't find a oil leak. I do spill some oil on my header when I change my oil filter, but I would assume it would all burn off rather quickly and not still be burning off up till my next oil change, or could it be? I know people get oil catch cans installed to keep oil out of the PCV valve. Would one smell oil burning through the air vents if a lot of oil was going into the PCV valve? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Oil catch can users! Do you still get a burning oil smell after you take the R out for a beating?
I don't know if it's related or not, but I just changed my oil and I took the car for a spin... and I'm smelling oil burning as well. This is the first time though...
Any ideas?

When you change your oil, it could be left over oil on the car. Don't worry about it unless it lasts for days and you see oil under your car like me.
haha, poor dennis and freakin alex
well, from what i know most people burn about a quart of oil in 3000 miles, especially since VTEC burns oil. as B2 said, does it stay for a while or go away fairly quickly. Same question for you Chris. Because one time i took my old car to Grease Monkey (i know, i know) and after driving for a little bit i noticed a little smoke coming out from my hood. found out it was oil they spilled that was burning off.

check the crank case breather box. (its to the upper right of the oil filter from the perspective of being under the car)
o-rings can go out, and cause oil to come out from the block. it then drips down and the cat is in the area where oil will drip down from the block or tranny case
first find out where the "burning is happening" then from there you will be able to better figure out where oil is leaking
