Default Bike noob: My bike won't start. Turns over, and there's only a clicking sound.

I bought a 78 Suzuki 550 from one of my friends. The bike ran fine when I got it about a month ago, but now it won't start. The bike turns over, and I hear a clicking sound when I'm trying to start it. I tried a kick start, but that won't work either. It feels mushy and it's not grabbing at all. Help, anybody?

clicking is usually the starter power feed contacts closing and opening b/c there is enough amperage for the contact closing circuit but not the hold in winding. But I don't think bikes typically use that type of starting system control setup. What feels mushy and like its not grabbing?

The kick start usually worked like a charm. But now it feels like it's not grabbing at all. When I kick, the bike does nothing.

if kickstart isnt working, you could have a TOTALLY dead battery. try pushstarting it. any make sure you charge your battery, cause like what the person said above, im guessings its your battery

always think: gas intake spark compression

Actually, I just found the problem yesterday. Spark plugs were dead. It was all black and reeked of gas. Like I said in my original post, the bike did turn over, but did not start, so I knew it wasn't the battery. But thanks for the inputs. I'm just glad I fixed it.

Will it bump start? if not try and jump the starter if that does not work then your ignition is shot... all of this depends on your battery being okay of course
