Default Tachometer wire on 91 civic hatchback

I'm about to be given a 1991 honda hatchback. I was wondering which and where is the wire that i would need to hook up an autometer 5 inch monster tach with shift light. If anyone knows the wire color.. inform me of anything..

the blue wire coming out of your distributor should be the answer as that is the wire to the coil

Also, after you install it and go into the higher RPMs, dont be surprised if your stock tach is a little off from your Autometer tach. Our civics/CRX stock tachs get more and more innaccurate the higher the RPM's go. With mine, when my Autometer tach is at 6500, my stock one is at something around 7100... So look at the autometer one. Up to about 3-4000, the stock tach is fine but after that, thats when it gets screwy.

You can swap clusters with an Si model of the same year. If you have an 88-89 then use a 88-89 Si cluster. If you have a 90-91 you need a 90-91 Si cluster. Plug and play.

you can also catch the blue wire in the passenger side plugs of the harness if you dont want to run a wire over your engine and make it look messy.

I haven't had any luck getting my Sunpro Mini Tach to function at all except with the lights. Red wire is attached to a spot that comes on with the ignition, white wire is attached to the headlight switch, black is to a good ground or else the lights wouldn't come on, but I am having trouble finding where to hook the green wire. It's a 1990 Civic DX hatchback, 4 speed manual tranny with no factory tachometer.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried several other locations that people have suggested with no luck.

You could also just install an Si cluster that already has a tach in it.

The blue wire on the small plug on the distributor. That or under the dash on the back of the cluster.

2003 post.

These people had it right 10+ years ago.

Why would anyone suggest hook up a dash mounted tach by running a wire all the way out into the engine bay to the distributor?

That's what the instructions on aftermarket tachs suggest. Not saying it's the best or right way to do it, but some of the instructions suggest wiring it to the distributor.

I know the thread is old, but if it helps the clock wiring is almost tailer made for a tach. It has a full time power (wh/blue), ignition power (Yellow), a headlight activated power (red - if your tach has a dimmer) and a ground (Black). Everything you need except the tach wire (blue in left most connector on cluster). Better yet it will pull through to the cluster compartment by removing the grommet in the air compartment. I shoved a foam ear plug in the grommet hole and wrapped with electrical tape. Works a treat.

I personally depinned the clock connector and put it in the holder for a blank I have installed in case I ever change my mind. Hope this helps as much as the OG posts helped me.
