Im asking this in this forum because I know alot of you here have done bottom end work for boost.

Im no where near the point of building my block yet but Im trying to learn what I need to do. I just want to name the things I know to do and want you guys to tell me if Im missing anything at all. Lets say I already have the head off and the shortblock is on an engine stand.

1. Disconnect rod caps (i think thats what they're called)
2. Push pistons from the bottom out of the top of the block.
3. Install new rings on pistons.
4. Make sure rings are set in the right order/sequence. (the gaps)
5. Install pistons on rods (still have no idea how this works)
6. Hone cylinders with a drill, honing device, and WD40 for about a minute/cylinder.
7. Use ring compressor to install pistons.
8. Torque rod caps.
9. -Is there where you would measure bearing clearances?-
10. Done with piston/rod install.

As you can tell, alot of parts of the process are hazy to me. I've never had any real experience doing this.. just reading as much as possible. I should probably get a helms or something.

Anything Im missing/doing wrong/doing right?

when pulling pistons out. Put rubber hose on the rod bolts to keep them from scratching the walls.

 

make sure you put the rods on the pistons right....There should be an arrow or notch on top of piston to indicate front.....Look at your old rods pistons and install the same way....... if not you will spin the bearings. Just make sure your pistons and tangs on rods are the same as stock.

 

I've noticed the arrow on pistons before but havnt payed attention to them. Are the arrows supposed to face the intake valves or the exhaust valves?

neither, they face the front of the engine. (timing belt)

 

Just a quick note....find out how much honing you need. A minute on each cylinder sounds excessive to me but maybe not.

I don't see an arrow on mine, but they're not OEM they are SRP pistons, what should I be looking for?
