Do heavy rims make you go slower?
Does any one have any experience with heavy rims? I got some 16inch motegi rims for 200 bucks rims and tires only have 300 miles on them. They are slightly heavier than my stock rims. I was wondering if that would effect the performance feel of my car? If anyone has any experience with this subject let me know.
there's a big equation for rotational mass. basically, every pound you add to something that spins like wheels, brakes, stuff like that makes you car accelerate and brake like it's a few pounds heavier. i don't remember the exact math, but i figured it out once that adding 40 pounds to each wheel/tire/brake would make your car feel 900 pounds heavier.
You would lose low end because it takes more power to get started but you would gain in the top end
because you would then be taken bigger strokes.Also your car will handle better.

I have some 16" Konig caffeins with Nitto 450's which weigh about 35 lbs. with the tires. I can definitely feel the difference when compared to my brother's 15" rims. It takes less effort to make the car get moving, and it feels like it revs faster. I'm currently in the process of finding some good lightweight 15" rims.

I have a set of 17" Tenzo shu-4's with NITTO 555 and there hella heavy compaired to my stock wheels and I do notice a difference in speed between the 2, if you want info on how heavy your wheel is go to

No, pretty much it's a lose, lose situation. Your car will handle worse, accelerate worse, brake worse, pretty much do everything in every situation worse.

Has anyone ever ran with lighter Wheels and then with the same Car run with heavyer wheels?
And do you have the numbers you ran? (In the 1/4 mile)
I just wanna see how much time you actually lose with different wheel wieghts.
Thanks

yes, heavier rims will slow you down, but what it really comes down to is the overall height of the tire and rim together. Your car was designed with a certain tire rim height in mind, if you increase overall height, the weight of the rim and height will change how your car performs, put your stock tire and rim next to your new ones, is there a big difference? I cant imaging that your new 16s are that much heavier, but maybe,but the real thing is overall height.(how long it takes to turn)
Pick up the current issue of Grassroots Motorsports
it has a huge article on weight reduction and a very specific article about rotation mass (heavier wheels).
Heavier rims are more harmful to the car than heavier hubs.
rim = a part of a wheel
