Wire snips (or whatever they're called) work. You can remove them, but you'll increase the chance of lodging a rock b/w the caliper and backside of the rotor, but many people have done it.
I need to do it too, b/c when my car was impounded after bein stolen, they dropped on its belly w/ no wheels and bent the ufck outta them....someone said that if i took them off, the first time it rained and i got the rotors hot, the water would warp them.
