PROBLEM!! LOSING 10MPG after installing AEM CAI
Hi Everyone-
I recently installed my AEM Cold Air Intake about 2 weeks ago and I bought it used. It was the older 2 piece version and the installation seemed to run smoothly. Just barely I started noticing my gas mileage sucked. I filled up with Premium Chevron and I have VTEC'd probably 2-3 in the last 90 miles and my fuel gauge is just above the 1/2 way mark. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I reset the ECU for 20 minutes when I initially installed the intake. The one thing I'm thinking about is, or that I am aware of is the coolant line I believe it is? The original owner said he didn't have the coolant line I believe. I'm guessing (which sounds terrible) that it is the black hose that runs from the nipple on the intake near the TB to the black metal pipes running from or around the intake manifold. Am I correct thus far? He included a rubber hose that fits around the intake and the metal line pretty tightly, but other than that I have no clue. PLEASE HELP. Gas is expensive enough, I don't want to pay more!! (Well, actually I'm in Utah and Chevron Premium is $1.62 so not to bad compared to the rest of the nation.)
Thanks in Advance!

dont push down on the gas that hard.. you have whats called "AEM intake sound syndrome" it happens to all of us who want to hear the kewl sound it makes..
you think thats bad?? wait till you get the turbo and all you want to hear is the bov and the turbo spooling!!!!! talk about sucky *** gas mileage!!!!

Ok, I admit that I occasionaly press down the gas hard, but not that much. Do you really think that just an AEM CAI can make my gas mileage that bad though?
HELP...THIS SUCKS!!!

The nipple on the AEM needs to be connected to the rearward side of the valve cover. The nipple on the TB needs to be connected to a nipple on the passenger side of the head just below the valve cover. Whether or not you keep the black metal tubes or ditch them is up to you. But regardless you should check to see if the connections you made are as I described above.

any open air intake might give you worse gas mileage...especially the CAI. Here's my non-expertise take on it: AEM CAI = more air AND colder air. colder air is dense. Dense air is pretty much more air by volume if you uncondense it. More air in all = more fuel needed to match air consumption. More fuel means worse gas mileage.
I dunno. I have worse gas mileage too after CAI installation, even with my homemade ice box set up...and no matter how skeptical you are...i promise...i DONT have the AEM CAI sound pedal happy disease or whatever you call it. Just do an experiment with CAI and stock intake, shift at 3000. try not to be pedal happy. Im sure youll get better mileage with stock intake and resonator.

RESET YOUR ECU AND NOT BY THE BATTERY. BY THE 2 FUSES UNDER THE HOOD ONE IS A 7.5 FOR THE RADIO AND THE OTHER IS RIGHT NEXT TO IT ON THE LEFT SIDE I DONT REMEMBER WHICH ONE IT IS FOR. THAT RESETS THE COMP. AEM CAI DOES NOT RIUN GAS MILEGE, IT MADE MINE MUCH BETTER ACTUALLY.................
After resetting your ecu you are supposed to turn on your car and let it idle for 5 minutes without revving at all. If you didnt do that that is probably why you are losing gas mileage.
Basically do this:
1. Remove the fuse from your fuse box that was previously talked about and leave it out for 5 minutes.
2. Put the fuse back in and turn on the car making sure not to hit the gas. Let the car idle for 5 minutes.
3. Turn off your car then turn it back on and drive as normal. See if that helps.

Just some wild guesses -
Maybe AEM CAI decreases low end torque and you're
developing heavier right foot to compensate for it ?
Or maybe you let the car idle for a long time
when you reset the ECU ? Did the car idle for 20 minutes ?

Don't go by what level your tank is after 90 miles.
Your foot probably lowered your mileage.
You should be able to get 230-260 miles on a tank with somewhat agressive driving. If not, your car, or you, has problems. Also, the intake itself is not going to hurt the mileage.

I get at least 260 miles to the tank.. and I'm turbo.. you should get about 300 m/t if your a kewl driver.. and dont succom to the syndrome.... it's a disease we all have to deal with at one point..
320-330 with combined driving. Akimoto intake, advanced timing, and Greddy SP exhaust with a 40lb wheel/tire package.
Yes, VTEC also.

Hi Everyone!
Wow, I've been really busy and haven't been able to check up on this post, but thanks everyone. The filter was cleaned right when I purchased it, and yes I did reset the ECU by unplugging the Fuses that everyone here told me. I followed the exact installation instructions that are listed on I believe speedoptions? But it was a step by step installation. After I took out the fuses, for 5-10 minutes I started the car and didn't give it any extra gas, I let it sit idle for around 10 minutes and then turned the car off. After that I went out and drove the car in VTEC so that the ECU would adjust whatever it is it adjusts to more "aggressive" driving. Normally before the modification my car was stock and if I drove normal, which for me was hiting VTEC maybe once a day I could get 310-330 on a full tank before the warning light came on. Right now I believe I hit the 1/2 way mark earlier today and I had around 135 or somewhere close to that. It's not a huge difference, but with gas prices, it is very annoying because I thought that the intake itself would at worst case stabalize MPG if not increase it.
Thanks Everyone.....anymore suggestions? (FRUGAL INTEGRA DRIVER!)
