At what velocity does port noise form?
I am thinking of a new box for my TDX. I have heard several things concerning the calculation of the port area. Some say it is fine if it is under 100mph(145 fps) and some home audio guys have said 17m/s(50 fps).
What should I be aiming for? BTW, at full volume winisd shows my current port is over 200 fps

i think it also has to do wiht the port shape and design. i like the B&W flowport technology
I have the PNR port. It is not as noisy as some, but at loud volumes it becomes very noticeable. I think the entry and exit are the most important parts to concetrate on in the port to prevent noise. Dimples in the port is a nice idea. Sounds feasible, since TOO has used dimples in honda heads to keep the mixture flowing. I think a large port is the only around this though.
I just read another article that says 10% the speed of sound or 113fps.

Haha. My port is not operating at the speed of light.

it also helps if the port edges are rounded rather than square. the square or drastic change in air flow causes more noise than a rounded, more graceful curve would

Very true. Rounding the edges of the port, dimples, Aeroports/PNR ports will all allow you to create less noise. But I feel there is a point where you will have noise regardless of what you do without increasing the port area.

Haha. Yeah I am a member,I think. I read too many boards. The carsound board would probably get me 20 pages though.
I ran into this link somewhere http://www.carstereo.com/help2/Articles.cfm?id=31
It seems to compute for a maximum of 60fps. It takes size of the driver and xmax into it calculation.
That means I need 50 square inches of port area
