depending on back spacing of wheels too , i know for drag racign on wheels like bogarts and welds, the back spacing requires spacers and you need extended studs and iopen head lug nuts to make sure the wheel can properly seat

It is easier to make sure the lugnuts have sufficient engagement with the wheel studs.
Also it is more apparent if one (or more) of the lugnuts have backed off a bit. *cough* Ross *cough*

You could try grinding down the wheel studs and slipping them in/out.
I would just remove the knuckle and press out the studs though, it does not take long to do (especially if you have done it before, as you have).
