Whats the deal with bumpstops?
What do they do? they stop the shock from bottoming out right? How do they do this? what do they look like? I am putting skunk2 lowering springs (2.5 inch drop) on koni yellows, can I just keep my bumstops stock? I don't want to be bothered with another thing. Thanks for your help.
It takes like 5 seconds to cut your bumpstops. :b You can do it with a utility knife or a saw, either will work. But with Koni yellows I suggest you cut them. Your owner manual or what have you should tell you how much to cut them. Most of the time you should just cut them in half with Konis.
It's like a yellow piece of foam. I had to but mine in half an keep only two of the rings. It's the easiest thing in the world it cut. Now cutting the Dust cover get yourself a hack saw and clamp. Just did my coil/shock install this past week.
I cut two of the "ribs" off the bottom of mine and it was perfect. I rode on them un touched for a few weeks and all they did was squeak and got bumpy. Also, my car sat higher in the front, I cut them and the drop evened, no more squeaky and it rides smooter. I used a utility knife and a vice.

I have koni yellows w/eibach sportlines, I should have probably cut the bumpstops. On full soft the suspension travel was too much and my car was bottoming out plus making "clanking" sounds from the rear. I'm too lazy to take em off again, so I tightened them up to 3/4 stiffness in the rear and 1/2 in front and I rarely hit the bumpstops now.
The sportlines are 1.8"f/1.7"r, so I would definately cut them with those springs.
edit: also be prepared to bore out the center of your stock bumpstops and dust covers, the koni's rod is much thicker than stock.

Thanks for all the help, but one more Q, How tall is the stock bumpstop? About 3 inches? so if I cut it in have I would get an extra 1.5 inches of travel?
