Default Research: Building a race motor

Where does your research begin???
What do you focus on first???
What is the last thing to consider???

When building an engine, there's so much to consider, there's incredible amounts of research to be done, but where do you begin???

Please give me a brief idea of the entire process.
This is the beginning of a long long long journey

The two things I start analysing are weight and traction. If you have a lot of either your gonna need and want torque. I was running a light car on street tyres so no traction for me. That is why I stuck with a B16. When they announced that BFG was bringing out Drag Radials to Australia, I decided to step up to a B20VTEC.

Once the motor is decided upon, you then spend a couple of hundred hours (I aint kidding) researching different setups on the internet. This is the best place on the net to start your long journey....

Factors that will determine the route to build your race motor would be:
1. Budget
2. Future Goals
3. All motor or Turbo
4. Type of Engine u want to use.

After you reach this fork in the road, there are many other options to take considering the factors you have now given yourself.

After brainstorming on which motor chassis setup you wanna run, youll find that focusing on the chassis is a good place to start. After the chassis the motor setup along with fuel and electronics. Theres plenty more missing but that should give a solid fondation.-pdang

Werd, figuring out the best setup isn't that hard, but funding it's building is. I KNOW for a fact that I have the experience and knowledge to assemble a 650+whp motor, but I also KNOW that I could never afford it cus im a college student. Instead I get to slave at a shop where I watch other people afford it and they get to have it.. DOH!

In my original post, my question is more focused on aspects of the motor such as r/s ratio, compression, flow numbers, custom cams (research), custom header..... and much much more

you get the idea

where does your research start???

I start with the piston/cam/RS ratio when building a motor. I decide what my HP goals are for the engine and what my rpm limit is going to be, and based on that I pick a camshaft/piston combination that will help me reach those goals. Money is always a factor.
After I build a motor and reach the goals set, I always seem to want more power.

Don't get hung up on R/S ratio when it comes to Honda's.

You can make a ton of power with 1.539, proven.
