Default When do tuning devices such as Hondata become nessecary for safety reasons (regarding compression)?

I am planning to start saving for a rebuild here sometime in the not to distant future (hopefully). The R is still running pretty strong, but she is burning alot of oil and is getting up in the mileage department. Almost 70,000mi on a 2001. While I have her torn apart I want to bump the compression on up. Most likely around 12:1. Right now I am only equipped with an FPR and VAFC for fuel tuning duties. Is there a point when Hondata becomes a nessecary in order to prevent detonation? With my current setup and properly sized injectors could the car be tuned to run safely? I know it will not be optimized in terms of power potential and it would eventually be addressed with funds, but I just wanted to know if it (Hondata) is something I need to have the car equipped with before attemtping high compression. Here in AL we are able to get 93 octane at all gas stations in case any are wondering. Thanks in advance.

your FOOT is the only thing that can prevent detonation

The car will be dyno tuned with either setup of course. I think someone is remembering a certain "I took the car up to 150mph before it was tuned" post.

tuning or not, it all boils down to how you drive.
the majority of detonation issues will occur at tip in, and onlyyou can prevent
tip in detonation.

What is "tip in"? Never heard that term before.

my $.02:

From what I understood, 12:1 can be safe on the streets with minimal tuning and stock ecu... just turn back the timing and **** out a bunch of fuel all the time... But you should be running some bigger cams which really like that compression anyway..... I have *heard* of some making ~200whp with stock itr cams and compression in that range. Local guy is running ctr pistons and jun 3's in his itr with no problems... but he's got hondata. Which happens to be like a recommended, but not absolutely necessary for the car to idle mod.....

Take it to sgT. Your motor will thank you later.
