Default When a bolt won't come off...what do YOU do?

Any special techniques you guys use for those extra tough bolts?

All I've been doing was putting a hammer to the wrench or ratchet...only failed me on the bolts that attach to exhaust and cat...which I cut off with a hacksaw.

hammer on the ratchet NEVER worked for me.
although I have bene known to repeat the atttempts and fail miserably year after year.

I use a 4 foot long tube (steel) that is the right size to slip over my ratchet handle and gives me monster sized leverage.
you would be amazed how easy it is to remove stubborn bolts with slow slow slow movement when you have the enough leverage.
its a strange feeling to remove a bolt that you spent an hour trying to remove... and when you get the monster sized breaker bar out it comes off in 5 seconds and using one hand... crazy.

If a mallet and 6pt box wrench don't do it....get a 3 ft section of pipe to slip over the end of the wrench to use as a breaker bar...works every time...if you do round it off...pound a size smaller socket over the bolt and use the breaker bar good luck...it is one of suckiest things you'll ever go through

I am having an issue with the tensioner bolt on the side of my B18A1. I have stripped the hell out of the bolt and don't really know what to try next. It's the 14 that goes on the crank pulley side of a B series LS block. Does anyone reccommend slotting and hitting it with an impact screwdriver?

twisted the head off my shock mounting bolt trying to get it off. hit it with pb blaster, try again, repeat, repeat, repeat for three days now. now i'm afraid to crank as hard on the other side, it's also stuck

tomorrow i'm taking it in to a shop, let them deal with it.

It sounds strange but it works: Try tightening the bolt a little. This will "break" it free. I heard this from a mech. and it does work in some cases (mostly with really heavy duty bolts like suspension).

those are all good advice. what i normally do is spray wd-40 or the liquid wrench and go as far as i can with the bolt (being careful not to break the stud it is attached to) and rotate it back to tighten, then go far as i can to loosen it again, so forth and so forth until it finally comes off. this is tedious but it you will be assured that you don't break the stud or round off the bolt.

What ever you do....do NOT break an easy out off in it if your trying to get a bolt out that has already broken. cost me $60 to get an easyout out, and the hole sleeved and re-taped.
