I dont know why this is happening, but it started when i put my b16 crx in reverse, went out of the driveway and went to pop it in 1st and it didnt go. heard a grinding noise like something was spinning, so i cut the engine off, let it stop, popped it in 1st, then 2nd, then popped it into 1st, and it went in gear.
then today when im driving to work, im goin about 70 in 5th gear, and my revs start goin high, then catching, then going high, then catching... so i pull over, stop completely, pop it into 1st, go through all the gears, and i keep my hand on the stick when i get in 5th and i feel it pull against my hand and feel it wanting to pop out of 5th and into neutral. I had to manually hold it in gear to get to work. This is probably a simple problem(thinking optimistically) but I don't know what's wrong. I've searched but didn't come up with anything. Someone help me out here?

i guess you have to open the tranny and see whats wrong, time for a rebuild

I would check fluid level first before you go rebuilding. Ryan

 

but we just filled the tranny, this swap was done a week ago and we checked and doublechecked that.

often times a tranny not staying in gear can be related to bad synchros. also i've heard that its very hard on the tranny if you rest your hand on the stick when driving all the time, and as a result it will fall out of gear overtime.

how much tranny fluid did you put in? It is at least 2 qts.... fill it to the top!

 

it sounds like the synchro on 5th its going bye bye
as u can see on some of my pics...

here u can see s synchro... theres supposed to be a metal ring thingy on thsi synchro right on top of the metal teeth... that ring its a clip.. what it does , is that hold the synchro sleeve and hold the gear on place.... if that ring gets bent, breaks or asoemthing , it doesnt do its job and can cause locks or kickouts of gears...

What do you think could be causing that? The kid that had this motor before me obviously beat the **** out of the tranny.

 

well reverse is right across the 5th gear synchro sleeve.... if it gets "stuck on gear" the tranny will not go into or out of any other gear.... happened to me....next time try putting it on 1st and right from there take it to R.. should let go.... but R doesnt have synhcro or anything.... jsut plain gear sitting there.... just play with tranny til it leets go

 

no i got it to let go, but it gets stuck every time i put it in reverse

synchro is not that expensive, but just have to pay for labor unless you can do it yourself
