b16 tranny pops out of gear
Hello everyone, I have a 98 civic with a b20 swap with b16 tranny. my problem is that when Im driving in the highway the 5th gear tends to pop out sometimes and I have to put it back in gear, dont know why? 1st thru 4th are perfect no grinds on any gears, when I shift to 5th no grinds just pops out after im going say 60mph and I have to hold with some force so it can stay in gear. Any suggestions as to what it could be? Or should I just save up money for another trans, any suggestions or advice is appreciated thanks.

it can be a syncro sleeve or syncro going bad......never seen a 4th to 5th going bad usually 2nd to 3rd sleeve takes a dump
make sure your motor mounts are good sometimes if the engine moves too much it will pop it out of gear

oh its gotta be your mounts asevildc2 said. i had a a similar problem and my rear mout and torque mounts were warn i just got some new energy bushings and it solved the problem and gave me precise shift feel. Just courious was your car an automatic before the swap?

yeha it was an auto d16y8 and then converted to manual, beat the **** out of it and then moved up to a dual cam. so you said it could be the motor mounts?

mine did the same thing d16z6 with s20 tranny. after it did that a few times got where i would put in 5th then would just rev not pull. went like a mile after it did that and the tranny completely went out.

did you use a conversion mount or did you weld the 5 speed mount in? cuz im thinking the tranz might be sitting at the wrong angle?

Yep. Starts with poping out of fifth, then you'll usually get bearing noise after they've been starved for fluid long enough, then gears start welding themselves to the input shaft and shredding themselves.

^tranny fluid as stated. 99% sure it will fix your problem, and at $25 worth of fluids is a lot cheaper and quicker than a tranny swap.

Hey everyone its me again I changed the tranny fluid, and now it works perfectly. It only had about 1qt of oil in it, so its a good thing I changed it. Thanks everyone for all your help!!! Just out of curiosity why is that, does it mean that it is leaking oil somewhere and thats the reason it only had 1qt of oil or is this normal or what?

I THINK the lack of lubrication and increased heat combined with the forces of the helical cut gear at highway speeds is too much for that 5th gear synchro assy. Somehow it just disengages itself. Im not sure, this is my best guess!
And no this is NOT normal.
